Intermittent Starting Woes
Tough topic but anyway thought I'd ask here first...
D1, LPG and Unleaded, V8.
Problem appears worse on warm days or when car has been started once already so I'm suspecting heat is playing a role somewhere.
On occasions car won't start. Turns over fine (very quickly at first, until battery gets tired). Disconnecting the condenser/capacitor from the negative LT lead on the Lucas coil used to make it start, but recently this hasn't been such a reliable fix. Upon disconnection I'd let it run for a few minutes, reconnect the condenser and then it'd start fine. But today no joy.
Problem exists on LPG or unleaded.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

What on earth is a condenser doing on the negative side of the coil??? It is a radio suppressor and belongs on the positive terminal! You have probably overloaded the ignition module and it is failing rapidly. You can replace the Lucas original type of ignition amplifier/module with a Bosch BIM024 module, thread here:

starting woes
I had a similar problem with my 96 disco tdi, told a mechanic at British Off Road my problem, he went straight to get an earth strap put it from battery to side of motor instant fix. This I might add after 4 different mechanics had been working on it over a 12 month period.

Intermittent Starting Woes
Hi BeeUtey, it's been there since I bought the car, I was wondering why there was a condenser there, the last time I saw one was on a car with points.. It's safe to run without?
I'll look at thread about updating the amp thanks, and I'll look at putting an earth strap on if there's not one there already, thanks guys!

Intermittent Starting Woes
Thanks for the advice and other thread BeeUtey, did the change this morning. I could only find BIM021 at the scrapyard but research suggested they're the same (be interested to hear your opinion) but the 021 was an earlier model.
Anyway it's all running, the spark jumps about 4 foot now! Compared to the weak crap spark that barely made 10mm before. Time will tell whether it's fixed the starting problems, but she seems to run a bit smoother, and oddly perhaps, turning off the ignition when finished seems to kill the engine more smoothly - previously it felt like it ran on for a couple of revs before stopping.
Thanks again!
Steve
