think it depends what you use it for, if its a weekend warrior then think about the 4.6, if its a bit more daily driver or tourer then I would think about going diesel, I have a 2.8 in mine and use it every day for everthing, and with no computers its something I can't see myself replacing any time soon.

It may be worth concidering getting another, healthier disco 1 and putting all your mods onto it, then sell the old one, best of both worlds then!

Plenty have had a 4.6 dropped into them. It's an easy upgrade. Turners can supply a Ductile flange liner block long motor with stage 1 heads and a Kent high torque cam already fitted.

There was the suggestion to upgrade to D2, why not re power it with d2 power.
    At least it'll do more than 20 liters/100 :-D

Thanks for all the opinions guys

Whatever we do, he wants to keep the manual trans
Finallyrangie; did you do the conversion or was it done when you purchased th vehicle?

Leaning towards 4.6 / LS1; he's a big kid at heart. I tend to think both would return better fuel economy than the 3.9

But the 2.8 would only increase it's versatility...

For an easy job, the 4.6 would be the one but you would have to take your time to fettle it to work with all the 3.9 ancillaries properly. You would also have to get something that is well cared for or a costly rebuild/new one.

I'm in the planning/saving stages to drop an LS2 with GM 4sp auto into the Disco. The R380 isn't really designed to take the torque available from the LS motors and my synchros are starting to play up.
