    New head for 94 300 TDI ?

    Hi all,

looking for some help and advice please.

I'm living in Mt Evelyn in Victoria and was wondering where can I go to get a new complete Head for my 94, 300 tdi and radiator.

Our trip to Queensland and back didn't go to plan . At the moment she is in NSW waiting to be shipped home, RACV recon it should take between 2-3 weeks ( Who have been outstanding in getting us home, excellent service ).

I'm thinking new head as she is old and not sure what she has had done before and radiator because the front looks quiet damaged. Will also look at getting a TM4 fitted once done.

Thanks in advance for your time,
    Kev

I got mine from Turner Engineering in Uk. I got the head (complete), new bolts gaskets and a few other bits and pieces landed here very quickly for around 1k. Probably best to wait until you get it home and pull the old one off and make sure the bores are ok before ordering. I have no idea about the radiator but I have seen a few threads about them recently.

You will need to establish if your block is still ok, find out the thickness of your head gasket (number of holes 0,1,2 or 3) hen you take the head off, unless your block needs to be decked then you will most likely need to keep the same thickness gasket. If you want to get ahead of the vehicle delivery then just take a punt on the gasket thickness and order your stuff from Turner's and then get a gasket locally if you need a different one.

thanks very much for the quick replies, much appreciated,

Is there a chance at all that the pistons and block could also be damaged? or could it just be that the head itself and gasket are done, might be best if I get a mechanic look at it as I haven't a clue and not sure what to look for TBH.

Will be getting a new head from Turners tho, just worried the block could be buggered

Check out eBay, there are a number of sellers (in Australia) prices vary from $700 to $1100, same as Turners heads, Regards Frank.

Dont jump the gun on buying a new head.

Hit it with a straight edge first to see how warped it is. If you have a mate at a metal shop a skim will usually cost a sixpack. If skimmed go up a size in head gasket.
The important part is any damage between cyl 2 and 3. A little corrosion is fine but if it a massive crater you may be in trouble.
My valves were not burnt or anything so I just lapped them in and replaced the stem seals.

Also shove your hand in the bore and try to move the piston side to side. They should wobble slightly but not heaps. Scoring in the bore will tell you which one is worn the most.

All up, my 'recond' head cost me $137 and she goes better than ever before.

The biggest thing I noticed was the increase in fuel efficiency! With a controlled right foot we get 900+km per tank!! I love it!!

Skimming the head, how does that require a thicker gasket? The head is flat. Are you making up for the valves protruding into the bore?
