No bands in these auto, steelo. All hydraulic control, and generally bulletproof. The trans is easily serviced. For info, hop into the markets and visit Dave's Interesting Things, and get a copy of RAVE 1.

You'll be amazed at the information contained therein.

Meantime, keep lopping the heads off the problems as they arise. You'll find you will fix them all in reasonably short time.

BTW, did your FRH swivel fixer put a new swivel seal into the assembly before fitting it? If not, they should have, then reset the swivel bearing preload. With new/adjusted bits in place, the swivel ball should not leak. Would have expected this in the price. Just an observation...

    Cheers

No he didn't change seals as he said they were fine I'll have to read up on these auto boxes & get some quotes just to see what I'm looking at.
This old girl is it as we can't really afford another, by the time we're ready to tour Oz (Feb 2014) I'm hoping to have ironed out most of the probs. Anyway better the devil you know than the one you don't LOL
Still doing the odd heating up then going back to normal then being all right for ages, then when you don't expect it BAM it heats up again

It shouldn't be there, but check anyway for pitting in the ball surface. Since you're in a saltier environment never know. And if it's had a fill of water. Pulling the fill plug (top plug) and replacing with a breather (m/f reduction fitting with a hosetail screwed into it) will stop it sucking in water if it's hot and suddenly doused. A cheap mod for a lot of benefit.

The ball is as smooth as & shiny as a mirror, haven't heard of the breather on a hub before, even on the Patrol forum. Do you run a hose as in diff breathers & such??

Just put 1 tube of lithium grease (black) in front hub for now, took it for a small drive including a CDL low range 1st gear climb & when I came back there didn't seem to be any leak. Will see how it goes for now & check it again tomorrow after a small local 4x4 drive up to Telecom Hill (named after towers) with club members.

Grease shouldn't really leak, the oil will leak at least when it warms up.

Well yesterday was the 1st time I've taken the old girl on a real off-road day trip & apart from a little over-heating it surprised me. I only had to use CDL-L 1st once (down hill) while others used low range for a good 1/2 of the drive, mainly due to mud & really articulating (very deep ruts) twisting tracks. I used CDL-H 1st & 2nd gears most of the time & was getting comments from behind on how easy it seemed to float over things. There was the occasional "clunk" noise from under me when the wheel either dropped or hit a big "rise" but I'll eventually work that out.
The V8 & it's easy power was also a big surprise to me with it's easy powering i.e. low revving, through deep (bottomed out a few of times) mud considering I only have Bridgestone Dueler 694 235/70/16's boots on & stock.
The only prob was a bit of overheating that the gauge didn't show, only know this as somebody asked to see under the bonnet & it was almost to hot to touch, but I have removed padding. There was a slight leakage around bottle cap but no steam, am wondering if cap is faulty. I bought a new thermostat from Repco yesterday (haven't put in yet) as well but was wondering as the fact that it doesn't have that small "pilot" hole at all.
I kept checking the swivel ball for any leakage, before I hit the mud & after & no sign of leakage at all, good so far. I found out how tight the auto holds its gears when I hit the tar as I unlocked the CDL but then put it into 1st as I had to go over a large rut diagonally before we hit the road then floored it, I was over 70, nearly 80, before I realised ooops

p.s. There is supposed to be a dash light when you engage CDL isn't there???? all other lights seem to be working.

Yes there is but are you actually engaging it? You said you are putting it in Cdl hi and Cdl low are you actually putting it across to the right to actually engage the Cdl? If you are then it either may not be engaging fully of perhaps your bulb has gone it show up as a little orange/yellow light
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
