Looking at a Discovery 1997 in Canberra

    Hi All,

I am on the look out for a 1997-98 discovery around the A.C.T S/NSW area and find that there is dealer in Phillip A.C.T that has one for sale. I had a 93 discovery 200Tdi before so know little bit about how they handle.

Is there anyone in the Canberra area that may have had a look at the one on www.carpoint.com.au (Rego YCB-17S) recently.

Plan to go and have a look at it on the way home from work tonight. Maybe does anyone think $8990 is too much to pay. It does have 256,324 Km on the clock.

If I think it is ok would there be anyone local who might have a second look for me.

(Also still to convince the wife to be I need it too.)

    Regards
    Tony

    potential negotiation

    Hi there,

well after chatting with the car yard they say they will replace the cracked windscreen with a new one and drop the price to $7990.00

The missus wants me to bargain the price down further before she lets me have it. Just asked for another drop but the guy doesn't seem too keen.

Ive been told what a car yard doesn't make on one car they pick up on the next. Does anyone support that statement?

Also have been doing some outside investigation and have found some very good things about this particular car but keeping it close at the moment until I can secure a decent price. Will let you all know in due course whether I buy it or not. stay tuned.

I can feel maybe becoming a landrover owner again is not too far away. However the missus reminds me that the wedding this year isn't going to be cheap.

8 grand seems fantastically expensive for 97 TDi, have seen them listed in the marketplace on here for less than that. I reckon there's a fair bit more room for negotiation in that price yet, particularly given it's a base spec S.

[Edit] Just looked at RedBook, and trade price is $1600-$3400. I'd definitely be looking to knock at least $2000 more off their selling price

    thanks

    Hi Doug,

Thanks for the response mate. Will keep haggling away and see what happens.

Will keep an eye out for what is around. Just noticed a guy selling a Disco series 2 with 300k full service history for $7,500 up in Sydney. Maybe that might be worth a look too.

    maybe found a better Disco

    Hi guys,

Waiting for a response from the car yard. Having looked at the red book as previously mentioned I am going cold on the car.

I have managed to find the full history of the car and went around to the garage and also spoke to orginal owner. It has had very regular services and saw the full history going back to 2002.

Shifted my eyes to a Series 2 for $7500 in Sydney. It does have another 44k on the clock than this old series one but it is a 2001 model as opposed to the 1997. Called the guy and he is going to give me first chance of a test drive this Saturday. To get the right car I suppose I have to drive quite away. Early morning start from Canberra to up north of Sydney and back in a day. Been awhile since I drove that far. We do get a bit lazy with driving down here in A.C.T.

Do you think I would be best focussing on a series 2 private sale?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

There is also something to be haggled out of that private sale. I love my D2 but I think that 300k is a few kms. Is it an auto? Rebuild could be expected as they don't last for ever.

Good luck which ever way you go.

    Thumbs up

So here is the status of the weekend.

I didn't buy the Discovery Series 1 from the car yard in Canberra. The car salesman said I need to sign up fairly soon as he had another buyer interested. The best offer was $7800 with a new windscreen.

So what did I end up buying? The Missus and I drove up to Sydney and bought a Discovery Series 2 early 2002 model. Absolutely loved it. The Missus wants an Amarok but at least I still got a Landrover. The Disco drove great from Sydney to Canberra. I ended up getting it for $7500 as the guy just wanted to sell it as he was going overseas. Oh it also had the full service history too.

Lets see how the Disco 2 turns out.

Already thinking what extras I can add to her now. The Disco, not the Missues. She has a ring for August when we get married.
