I live remotely and rely on my 4WD to get home in winter. I bought a 1996 Discovery in August and after hitting a roo 2 months later, I noticed oil and coolant leaks. After full assessment by Landrover Specialist in ACT, there report stated,
    • leaking coolant from Water Pump,
    • Speedo Fluctuates recommend replacing instrument cluster
    • Numerous oil leaks from engine and gearbox, Engine oil blowing out the dipstick tube, and recommend Engine requires overhaul. Quoted $8000.
    Im unsure what to do???
The rest of the vehicle is in great condition!

    Laura
    get new water pump,
speedo, up to you. GPS is used by many but I doubt it would pass a roadworthy.

numerous oil leaks engine and gearbox and crankcase pressure. This one together with the difficulty in starting suggests a worn engine. If your battery is in good health and the engine spins up nice and fast then you are likely to be low on compression (worn internals of the engine). Do you wait for the glow plugs to do their thing or are you trying to start without glowing the engine?

Did the mechanics report provide individual cylinder pressures?.

300 Tdi engines can be had second hand but they still demand a good price and with a cheap unknown one you may not improve your situation significantly.

Here is a cheap one but it will need a bit of money to get the head sorted and you will still need the water pump as it is missing on this one.

This one needs more work and it does not come with a warranty. Wreckers will sometimes offer a short warranty if they are confident of the condition of what they are selling.

For the price of this one you would expect a warranty, within the 3mths as this one comes with you could drive it and test it to ensure it was not a total lemon.

With this one it sounds ok in as far as it has been tested but good luck claiming on any warranty (if the reference to Austria is a typo) although the shipping is not that expensive, just need to sort out what duty you would be up for.

You could call Hans on this one

We are getting a bit ahead of ourselves here with the replacement engine until you get someone else to check it out for you.

    1: lives remotely
2: wants and relays on it to get home
3: if it was a v8 she would have brought a D4 instead
4: not enough fuel stations in the whole of the ACT to run a v8 anyway
4: Not stated that it was on gas
5: A 200 / 300 TDI would fit all of her requiments on rely on my 4WD to get home

I know Laura. I directed her here to try help her find a solution to her problems with the 300tdi engine in her disco.
    Cheers

Mate, IMHO one of the problems of this post is not enough information, or information so general that it is useless.

Could you go have a look at the car and report to the forum in "Land Rover" language?
Alternatively direct Laura to a mechanic who knows Land Rovers and can give an accurate diagnosis.
Again IMHO we haven't really got anywhere near actually helping her.

Mate, If I could, I would but the vehicle in question is 8 hours away from where I am. It's difficult to contact Laura at the best of times and the information I have is basically what's been posted here already.
I only have contacts for mechanics I know to be trustworthy in Melbourne, so directing her somewhere nearer to her is also not something I can do.

Hence I have directed her here, to aulro, to people who know more about these engines or perhaps to find a forum member in a position to assist her by being closer to Bendoc than Gilderoy is.
    Cheers

    Walter Cavinato, Polo Flat Cooma

    Hi Laura,

Walter is an old school Land Rover and general mechanic at Polo Flat. Not sure if he does later models but you could ring him - it's closer than Canberra.

Brian at Merlin Motors in Orbost is not a Landrover specialist but he replaced the motor in my D1 (V8). He would be able to check it over and give an opinion. He would be one of the better mechanics in your area!
