is the engine idle-ing to high and check kick down cable adjustment
Background info:
Bought her with a snapped crankshaft at the snout so I don't know how it drove previously. Bottom end rebuild done, timing kit, hoses etc etc
As part of my routine for a "new" car, all fluids done so it copped a trans filter kit & a flush
Symptom:
When in "D" & slowing to an intersection the auto clunks fairly harshly back into second just under the 40kph mark. (similar to a lot of diff backlash)
Extra Notes:
If I VERY slowly approach an intersection it wont happen maybe 30-40% of the time. If I select 3 on the shifter it does not occur under any conditions.
All upshifts are fine, no problems with that at all its actually quite smooth but yet precise in all other circumstances.
Are there any auto trans techs or experts that could help with this one

when my kick down cable was to tight the car would snap as it changed down and it took a bit to get it right, check also the cable isnt tight in side itself, mine had gradually stiffened up and made the throttle pedal heavier but as it happened over time you dont notice until you replace[the reason for replacement was the kickdown cable was fraying at the injector pump end], way smoother changes with a new cable
disonnect the kick down cable and massage some lube into it. Take it for a drive with the cable disconnected.
if it still does it I have no cheap news for you.

you have to make sure that the cable has retracted naturally as far as it can, DONT try to push the cable back into the sheath but you can massage and flex the outer sheath. IF you massage a kink and you hear or see it click back its most definately cable drag thats getting you.

Forgot to reply to this. Anyway the problem went as soon as the cable was disconnected. Have gave it a go lubing it & been running it for a while now with no probs except for remaining backlash in the driveline but no harsh thumping.

I have a 1996 auto tdi and it has exactly the same problem. On coasting and slowing down when in D, a big thunk as it drops down to 3rd gear at just under 40km/hr. Does not always do it, but is doing it more often as time goes on.
I've checked the backlash in the front drive shaft and at a guess maybe 9 degrees and the rear maybe 8 degrees. No difference with TC locked or not.
I will look at the cable issue as suggested.
Can anyone point me to which cable is the kickdown cable (I have a mechanical fuel injection system).
