I located the kick down cable and disconnected it. Vehicle behaves very differently.
Loud clunk has gone as I drift down to about 40km/hr now (this is good). I can feel a bit of a tug as it drops down to 3rd (but that's ok).
I notice that on load going up a hill, it does not drop down a gear automatically so I have to drop the gears manually to suit. It does drop down the gears as I coast down in speed however. Not so good if towing a heavy load or up a hill.
Cable is easy to slide in and out however, nothing tight. Even so, the kick down has something to do with the problem, but what?
I've just silicon sprayed lubricant down the cable, and will later re-connect it and try adjusting it (slacken it off a bit) to see if I can find a compromise position between not having the horrible clunk and getting it to drop down in gears automatically on load.
Will advise on how it goes.
Check the cable adjustment, should be slightly slack at rest.
