    High revs on start

Of late my D1 3.9 V8 has been going to 1500 RPM on about every third start. It's now going to 1900 RPM on every start, hangs there for about 3-4 seconds then decreases back to normal idle in increments of 300 RPM over the next 6-7 seconds and then idles beautifully at 650 RPM. Also, moving from drive to neutral the revs increase to around 1200 then slowly drop back. I have cleaned the stepper motor with no effect. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It still could be the stepper motor being slow to return to idle setting, cleaning it out wont necessarily fix if its stuffed. If your engine revs up fine whilst driving, then id try another stepper motor as it does most of its work at idle. Your throttle still has a mechanical setup eg cable operated throttle.

    Agree.
The stepper motor winds fully out when you turn the engine off, so it will always rev high if it is slow to react on start up.

Try cleaning it first by using a cotton bud in the housing and also cleaning off the cone. DO NOT try to pull the cone out as the way it works is a screw thread inside which the motor spins around to screw it in and out and it is easily broken.

    High revs on start

Thanks for the input guys, greatly appreciated.
I gave it another clean which improved it slightly but revs still slow to reduce. The stepper only moves about one millimetre when power is applied and then removed. New stepper motors are about $400 and there is none in Oz.
    Thanks again and regards,

??????? They are from about $30 on Ebay from UK and USA.
The earlier type with straight on square plug is the cheaper as it is used on many Chevs and others.
