Thread: Help Newbie with Serpentine Belt Change

1/ remove the top radiator cowl.
2/ with the appropriate sized ring spanner put tension on the tensioner pulley next to the alternator
3/ with appropriate naughty words and grunts increase tension until the serpentine belt has enough slack to slide off the other pulleys
4/ wiggle it.
5/ using fresh naughty words, reverse the process
6/ refit the cowl and switch on listening for embuggerances.
7/ pat self on back

Make sure you have the correct belt as there are 2 different length belts for the 300 tdi engines, but not sure when the change was made.

By the way, is it a Defender or Discovery?

It's a disco.
I am aware of the 2 different lengths. I have bought a 7pk1580.
I'll pull the belts off first thing in the morning and double check I have the right one. But need to get the other belt which runs to the a/c unit, as that's showing signs of wear too.

I've you-tubed and found vids on replacing the main serpentine belt which seems straight forward (so says the newbie).

But not sure how the manual tensioner works on the ac belt, though. I presume I have to loosen the 3 bolts on the outer end of the arm but if any one has a link to a vid or advice on the manual tensioner that would be greatly received.

Loosen the 3 bolts and place a breaker bar square end in the hole provided and rotate to loosen and tighten the belt, when correct tension is reached hold position with breaker bar and tighten the 3 locking bolts, Regards Frank.

Belts are now off and waiting for Repco to open. Hoping they have the comppressor belt somewhere in stock.

However, when loosening the first (left most bolt) on the manual tensioner, I knocked a coolant system hose and coolant started spewing everywhere. When I checked I have broken, a small (4cm diameter) housing/distributor that has a single slightly larger hose on the bottom and two smaller hoses at the top.

First off, what is that called?
Second, are they a universal part for all cars or landy's or specific to a 300tdi?

Looking through the Disco manual I found last night the smaller hoses I talked about are the purge hoses from the thermostat and radiator which feed back into the header tank. If that helps anyone.

But still can't find any mention of what this part is called?

its also known as the vactuator.

if you need urgent parts I think I still have backup spares of the belts and the vactuator assy on shelf.
