    Windscreen Seals

    G'day,
I was working on the roof of my disco 1 1996 tdi tonight and whilst there i peeled back the rubber finisher at the top of the windscreen and noticed some bad corrosion. I always knew the seal wasnt perfect but now i definately need to do something. I read on another thread here that you may as well get whole new windscreen and seals as the price isnt much different but that seems silly to me. I can get the finishers for about 100 pounds all around. I assume a windscreen here would be about $500 minimum so not sure what that was about.

Someone mentioned the windscreen is bonded. Can someone please explain what this means? I was hoping to pull the screen out myself and rust treat / respray the rusted bits and then getting window pro to put the screen back in.

Am i just dreaming? Can this be done or should i just get them to do it all? I just wanted to treat the area myself tho coz i trust my work.

Also the seal is in four sections. Theres two sides and top n bottom. These are called finishers. Is this all you need or is there more to it?

Again, thanks for all the input. Couldnt live without this site. Before the internet i would actually have had to make friends!!! Also probably driven all over the country to get all this good advice.

I dont have a specific answer for you but i will share my experience as it only happened 2 weekends ago. Straight up the windscreen replacement is a pain in the a**.

Ive got a close friend who replaces windscreens and said in the intrest of keeping the friendship he didnt want to work on it.

the bonnet needs to be removed. the guy who ended up doing it charged 365 its been back twice and is still leaking. the seals in my example dont really seal all that well. well the top one anyway. with enough windscreen sealant i will just stick the top seal back on and hopefully that will work.

    good luck

thanks, but do you know if the windscreen slots in and then you put the seals in over it? is there another seal on the inside? if you are not sure then it's fine thanks for your info all the same.

ive been attacked with a few issues lately. doing my head in. looking at 2.5k now all up if i include the 500 roughly for windscreen (everything is dearer in perth).

    Got some info

Apparently 94 onwards they have a windscreen thats bonded (glued) to the frame and the finishers then go in, 4 of.

Getting the windscreen out is a bit of a hassle. one guy i spoke to said hes done some before and knows what to expect. he quote me $200 to pull the screen out, let me rust treat it and paint, then he puts the windscreen back in a few days later. another mob quoted me $130 for removal and reinst. and if they break the screen an extra 200 on top. they didnt really sound like they knew what they were getting into though.

for the seals i got quoted $359 from a WA supplier. the guy said genuine LR but this is cheaper than you would pay for genuine in the UK so im thinking hes talking out his exhaust pipe. I can get OEM sent over from the UK for $280. the LR ones would be about $450 delivered.

hope this will help other people in the future.

    heres some more info:

apparently there are heated front windscreens too similiar to the back windows. i spoke to a LR supplier and they explained this to me. so you would need to order the correct finisher depending on the type you have. he seemed to think in australia we didnt get the heater front. this only applies to the bottom finisher.

here are the part numbers for anyone interested, these are the LR part numbers

    top finisher AWR2025P1
    LH side finisher AWR2024P1
    RH side fnisher AWR2023P1
bottom finisher (non heated, see above) AWR1512P

    Fausto79 is correct.
The windscreen is sealed to the body (bonded) as you need to cut it with a similar flexible cutter as in the manual so you don't break the screen. The parts you are talking about only cover the area and reduce wind noise.
If you have seen it done before it is not difficult just time consuming and you have to be careful and take your time, otherwise not to bad to do one.
    Good luck with the project.

    No windscreen

Guy came today to do the windscreen. Seemed like he knew discos. Went upstairs to clean up the shower screen and disnt even get 1/4 way through and he called out to me (maybe 8 mins max).

Went downstairs he already had the screen off.

Gona get rid of all the rust (theres a fair bit) and respray it and the guy will come back and refit. He quoted me $130 for the lot.

Seemed fair to me, he said the seals were still quite good but already got new ones coming.

    Good job and top price.
Don't skimp on the metal repairs and painting as if you do a good job you will never have to do it again or have water leaking problems.
Great to see people doing good restoration work.

    Full respray

was talking to a guy at work that does restoration jobs. He said while i got the windscreen out its perfect time to respray the roof. he says this because ive asked him before about respraying as the guy who owned the car before me did a home job and a really bad one. you can see all the orange peel and also the clear coat where it dripped down the sides.

i pulled the factory rails off to fit my roof rack and covered the holes with thin steel plate and bogged over the top of them. so theres 4 sections on roof too which will be smooth with new paint and he rekons it will show so advised me seeing as im doing the windscreen surround and the 4 sections on the roof im already doing 40% of the roof you may as well do the other 60%. kinda see where hes coming from, but seems a lot of work. i started with little jobs and theyve snowballed into a lot bigger. i pulled off all the brittle cracked plastic on the gutter as well and will be replacing those. ill have a brand new disco soon.

just wana get it back on the road and camping/fishing before summer starts. be nice to do a winter camping trip with fire and cold and trout.
