    Rolling in park with hand brake on

    Hey all,

    Yesterday I pulled up on a hill and put my D1 in park then applied the hand brake, got out walked two paces and noticed the old bugger was running away down hill...Luckily I was able to get alongside and slam my foot on the brake, but not without some risk of injury!

    I've noticed this failure to stand still before but as I'm usually still in the car i just push the gear lever into P again, pull harder on the park brake and that seems to work.

    When the park brake fails to engage you can hear a clicking sound (gearbox?), like the park gear isn't properly engaged or maybe it is the hand brake?

    Anyone else had a similar problem?

    Yeah I had a similar problem, on the side of the gearbox the selector cable housing had come away from its clip, I reattached it and it came good, take a look and see if you can spot it, if not I can post a picture later

    Or your park pawl is broken.
    Although it would take a big speed while putting in Park to break as they are pretty rugged. There was a thread with a photo recently.
    Most likely not going fully into park. Does it start in P or do you have to jiggle the T bar.

    Thanks for the feedback,
    I'll have a look at the selector cable and see how that looks..

    Starts about 95% of the time in park...the other 5% I had been thinking related to the spider problem or a glow plug relay, or faulty earth off the starter motor.

    I had this on my disco. On mine the selector leaver that the cable joins to was a bit floged out on the shaft coming out of the trany. This caused a bit of play which ment it would not go into gear or park properly usually had to wiggle the gear selector back and fourth for it to go in D or P etc. was an easy fix just remove selector leaver off side of tranny and give it a wack with hammer to close gap up a bit. Be carfull not to hit too hard and close it too far as you won't get it back on. Works a treat now.
