My quandary, my 96, 3.9. Disco is great , not even any oil leaks , except rust above screen, bottom of A pillar, a little bit near safari window, and a big but patched hole in the fire wall. For me to fix which I can, except the FW I just don't feel like pulling the motor, will prob cost over $500 in material, and a good chunk of my Christmas time off . Also RR the screen doesn't excite me either ..
It cost $3000 to buy is low km's but will never be worth more , do I fix it or just keep running it into the ground and put the repair money to a better disco, or find a " rust free" if such a thing exists ..with a blow motor, box etc and swap my gear over..feed back would be great ..Gary

Hi Gary S11,
Whats the interior like .....could you do all the external rust items and leave the fire wall till you have to pull the motor out.
The safari windows are a problem areas for Disco's, so your not alone there, but rarer to have a Landrover that doesent leak any oil
I'd go the respray.......she's still worth it.
Cheers
Baggy
Thanks , the interior is all good, she's only done 120,000 km's . So apart from the below its all good, and I just put the ashcroft in the rear, well it looks like I might go the over haul way ...
I wonder if you could get a warranty claim from LRA, Land Rovers as supposed to leak oil, that's their efficient rust proofing system. They should never rust if properly oiled. The Alpine window rust as mentioned is a common problem. The cause is lack of oil reaching the roof to protect the Alpine window surround is the cause of this.
Land Rovers oil rust proofing system was upgraded when the D2 was developed, and lots of engineering was undertaken and the end result was the successful anti rusting system for the TD5 engine developed that utilised the engine oil cleverly by feeding engine oil up through the Injector loom wires. They then patented this new system and so far no other manufacturer of 4wds was able to use the same system.
Where Land Rover engineers missed the point was, when they did not allow a flow regulator to regulate the flow of oil in the injector loom rust proofing system. This eventually lead to over oiling and the system feeding oil too far up the injector loom which resulted rust proofing oil reaching the plastic ECU connector. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work out the plastic does not rust so no rust proofing oil was required for this component.
Sorry I couldn't help myself, I was bored.![]()
Your right, there's a d2 in town , the steering box and other bits are leaking so much the back of the white disco is a muddy, dusty, oily black. Not to mention the horrible crunching clunking noise it makes when it drives off. A and your right no rust ..but I the the EPA Has him. In their sights ..thanks for your time and input. It didn't help one bit :-)
