Just adjusting my tappets now and thought i'd check the manifold bolts while i was there and found most of the exhaust manifold nuts loose .
That explains the noise i was expecting to be tappets, on the tappets, the only bloody feeler i dont have is .2mm .
Will have to go either .23 or .18mm - may go .23 and err on the side of caution.

Thanks all. I'll order a new gasket and see where that gets me.

hi all. Thought I'd come back and update the issue for future reference.
The exhaust manifold gasket was in 5 different parts when I removed it and the last 2 studs were actually missing altogether. Replaced everything and the noise has disappeared.
Thanks to everyone who offered their advice and suggestions.
