just sealant, the black land rover sealant will do the job, leave it to set over night/12-24 hours to set and should be fine, don't need that amount of time but will help set properly.
In regards to the rear main, from memory there were some little T type seals that used to get replaced too, (might not have been on 300tdi though)
there was a little bit that used to over hang that some people cut too short causing a leak, easy fix was to put some of that black sealant at the end of them to help seal.

thanks all for the replies, top form spel for the knowledge on the gasket!
ive done the good old rtv silicon job for the moment, so fingers crossed she holds!
all over triumph rover spares aswell, close to home which is always a good thing!!
