if you have a new whitish smoke on start up the injector pump is retarded too far.
i fellas/fellettes,
I am keen for some advice. I had the timing belt on my 300Tdi renewed a couple of weeks ago, and ever since, the engine has been stalling, not all the time, mainly as I approach a junction and have to slow down and put the gears in neutral. It stalls a few times with the air-con off, and a lot more with the air-con on. I think (now that I am paranoid!) that the idle speed may me a little low. Is this likely to have been caused by the timing belt renewal, or un-related? Ideas to sort it? if it's the idle speed, what should it be and how do I increase it? I would think it is at about 700rpm on the dial, but it dips below that in neutral and sometimes comes back up, but sometimes stalls...

Thanks Dave I will check, but I assume the mechanic would have locked the injector pump before removing the timing belt? Is there some fine tuning needed after the new belt is fitted that may not be quite correct?
i'm with blknight, sounds like injector pump timing is out with the new belt.
no adjustments should be needed with the new belt and if it's only been since the new belt was put on then i'd say it's that.
Did it have a new fuel filter put on at the same time? (just in case it's air in the fuel filter/fuel system not bleed properly).
its very easy to get the timing out one tooth on the pump (or a half tooth if the crank isnt held) when putting the belt on.

Thanks fellas. No new fuel filter, coincidentally the fuel line/tank was inspected and cleaned out due to a separate fault, but I've done 1000 kms since then and all is good so far as fuel is concerned
So the mechanic's diagnosis was dodgy fuel, he recommended that I empty the fuel replace with new, and injector cleaner, replace the fuel filter and all should be good. While I was getting through 80l of new fuel, I spoke to a mobile mechanic servicing another diesel car I have (he saved me $1000 minimum by getting my car started where another had told me the injector pump was stuffed!!), and he also said the timing was out! He also said that it would b easy to check by testing the 'spool speed' and he would be happy to test it and produce a report for me. So back it went to the local independent LR people here for them to check again. This time they have said that there is something wrong with the injector pump - the dodgy fuel has stripped all the seals, and it will cost me $1600 for them to remove it, get it reconditioned and put it back!! It just seems an amazing coincidence that the car runs fine once it has started, ran fine before the timing belt was changed, and now has a fault.
So what would any of you mob do next if it was your car?
If it was me id get the Mobile Mechanic to give it a look over and report.
Dave
dodgy fuel... pah... sounds like your mechanic doesnt deal with proper high pressure fuel systems...
if its mobile enough and you can get it out to the switch drop me a PM...
failing thatif you have a decent socket set you can check it yourself with a torch and a drill bit.
