    What oil in R380and LT230?

    Hi all.

I know there have been previous posts about it but i wanted to check if anyone made any recent oil changes or upgrades that they found good for their gearbox and xfer case. Especially with accent on syntetic vs. mineral?

I just finished putting mine back in after overhaul and i need to put some fluid in. Good proven brand would be very helpfull!

    Many thanks!

    Castrol oils

    Hi,
This seems to be a very emotive subject. Many here like the Penrite range of oils. I personally like Castrol oil. Probably because I've used them for many years in the trade and never had any problems. Not to say of course that any of the top shelf brands will course problems.
For the R380 and LT230 I would recommend the Syntrax and Syntrans oils. It's what I use and I've found shifting to be good. I think though that the D1 uses Dextron III in the gearbox so I would recommend that you do a vehicle search on any of the major oil company websites.

    Good luck!
    Nino.

    Use Syntrans 75-85

    - not syntrax

20 litre drum is about $230, you can buy small bottles to do what you need at a higher rate/litre

Thanks all for the advice. I ended up with dex 3 for gearbox after fainting a few times when they told me the price of syntrans. I plan drain and refill soon anyway as i may have some swarf and other "rubbish" in there due to work done to it.

There's a 'definitive list' of oils by Rick130 in the Good Oil thread, which has lots of alternatives to syntrans for the R380.

I've used Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75 in the past and currently have Valvoline Duragear 75/85 in mine.

I've no idea what was in the gearbox when I bought it, but don't appear to have any issues using the Valvoline stuff. Certainly cheaper than syntrans too!

Poor choice Roamer , LR gave away using auto trans fluid in the manual R380 many years ago. Castrol VMX 80 at around $40 for 5 litres is about as good as it gets without selling the missus and kids into slavery to get Syntrans.

As for the transfer case, good old 90 grade is all that's needed here, nothing fancy.

Oh well. We live and learn. I'll do better rsearch after drain /refill. And find something more suitable. This was temporary anyway.
