300 tdi tacho drop out and noise from around pulleys

Brother picked up his disco from sydney yesterday and drove home no problems...
Except for an erratic tacho which got progressively worse to the point it now doesn't register at all.

I havent had a chance to look at it yet so for those in the know:
Where's the tacho pick up its reading? And could this be at all related to a noise he says is coming from the area close to the alternator and water pump pulleys?

Won't get a chance to have a look until later in the week - any leads appreciated

Those sound like classic signs of a failing/failed alternator.

Tacho gets its signal from a separate connection on the alternator.

Drop the belt off and have a spin and wriggle of the alternator pulley for starters. Was the battery light on too?

    Cool The most common cause.

Check out the smallish white wire on the back of the alternator, the female spade connector on the end of that white wire gets cooked by exhaust heat etc and a bad connection occurs either where the wire enters the connector or the connector goes onto the alternator.
Sometimes it is easier to cut the old one off the end of the wire and fit a new female spade.
Worked on our 300Tdi, no problems for past 2 years.

While the belt is off give the PS pump pulley a tug and see if it moves, they walk out causing noises and shredded belts.

I'll have a look later this week and let you know what I find

Finally got around to it... dropped the belt off and horrible metallic growl coming from alternator. Pulled it out and apart: rear bearing failed. Front not healthy either. New one arrived today, along with a filter kit and belt set. So hopefully fit that lot soon. PS pump pulley seems fine.

    Cheers all.
