Thread: Door Lock Problems

Hi Everyone,

My Disco 1, 1999 model is having problems with the central locking system. When you go to lock the doors with the remote, the rear door stays in the unlocked position, and when you go to unlock the doors with the remote the two rear passenger doors do not unlock properly.
I was advised to buy a certain spring set which i have done, but just want to make sure these springs will fix the problem before i start to remove all the door linings etc.

Any direction would be great.

It seems strange that both doors on the rear are playing up. In my limited experience (I've replaced the spring on the rear near side door and the tail gate) I found the springs don't go at the the same time and can be many months apart. Generally the kids get out of the back through the rear near side door, spring gets more use and breaks. If you've had the car for a while then I suspect something else may be the problem. I suspect it could be the wiring - flaky earth on the actuators, pinched wire, or a build up of dust/dirt around the door mechanism (spray with a suitable cleaner). If one door went first and the later the other door then springs will be the prime candidate.

Start by pulling the lining off one of the doors at the rear and have a good look and what is happening. Allow an 60 minutes to change the spring the first time, perhaps a bit more. My tailgate lock jammed up with dust and couldn't be opened but after cleaning out the dust it works fine.

One final thought is how is your battery? I've noticed my central locking being a bit slow of late and I'm wondering if my battery is dying but then starting the car is fine. I should check my voltage before winter sets in.
