Question 300tdi disco rattling at idle

Gday folks ,I,ve 96 disco 205k 300tdi that when first started from cold clicks for a couple of seconds ,and is very quiet and smooth until warmed up it has a noticable rattle apparently coming from the front top end .I've had vacuum pump checked but it appears to be ok .the rattle was still there when VP was removed , good oil pressure, valve caps , valve gaps all good and in place, also the rattle is not coming from the familiar clutch plate .Spoke to Landrover mechanic and he tends to think the rattle is coming from worn cam followers as the engine was rebuilt some 30 k ago at considerable expense to the previous owner thank g--. the mechanic said cam followers don't seem to be a priority when rebuild an engine.when driving the Disco she goes great ,no smoke ,plenty of power but when it comes to an idle yes the rattle is back.I have a defender 200k 300tdi which runs terrific and very quiet at idle .Has anybody changed out the cam followers and got rid of the rattle or suggest something else to check . I did tappet adjustment and when cranking over engine to adjust each tappet coming to number 1 while turning engine the valve had a noticable click, the valve tended to stick for a bit then popped up.

I would inspect closely the valve springs for a broken spring, if not that get someone to manually crank the engine slowly and observe the actions of the springs on their seats and rocker arm movement on the rocker shaft, also check the studs/bolts holding down the rocker shaft pedestals, good luck, Regards Frank.

This may be a wild one............Is there a chance that the water pump may be cavitating?? If there is any air in the water pump it can make one hell of a rattle.
Try and unscrew that brass nut at the top of the engine and see if any air is trapped there.

The only other thing I can think of is that idler that is rubber mounted at the top of the motor for the fan belt.

It could be a cheap alternative to an expensive one? Good luck.

If a valve is sticking it could be a worn guide or loose seat ?

I traced a rattle to the bobble thing in the bypass hole of the thermostat.
The noise is quite audible and goes away after warming up.

What the....??? The little pin in the hole on the body of thermostat? You can hear that rattling????
You are either super fussy, or my engine is lot worse than I taught
