    300 tDi "lag" on takeoff

    Hi all,

This might be a duplicate post as I recall seeing similar one boefre but for the life of me, I can't find it!!!!

My D1 300 tDi manual has kind of a lag on takeoff from standstill. So clutch in, 1st gear, clutch out, and when clutch is fully out, engine stuters a little, rpms drop, like it's got some sort of a lag in building power up. This is all over in about 2 seconds as rpms climb up again. I can overcome this only by revving the engine much more than normal to take of. On inclines, even this doesn't help.

Is this a known fact and what's the cure for it?

    Thanx all!!!

Does it also stutter with the grip of the front wheels when turning sharp on dirt roads? If so, time to change the clutch. Sounds like slipping clutch disc. I had the exact symptoms. Changed the clutch and problem solved. The clutch disc was worn down to the rivets and the flywheel was glazed. Also the disc springs were also worn and rattling in their mounts on the disc.Hope this helps

Nah mate, clutch is ok. This is more hesitation to get the revs up. Maybe i used wrong term stutter.

Thanks for the recommendation Frank, bit I'd rather keep it manual. Never liked autos for some rason. I'd rather get rid of the lag than my transmission

In what way is the auto better perfomer offroad? Is something specific to doesel disco?

    Thanx

Auto doubles torque at low revs, allows slippage to allow 300TDi to come on boost, Clutch loses torque at low revs, always in correct gear while climbing, so much better on sand than a manual and less harsh on the rest of the drivetrain, try this, stop on a steep slippery slope in a manual and take off again without losing traction, Regards Frank.

Has it always done it? Stock 300tdi manuals have a big lag until the turbo kicks in around 1800 rpm. (or later if it is worn).

Other things to try are cleaning your intercooler and replacing your injectors.

If that doesn't work fit a boost and EGT guage and start tweaking the pump.

All makes sense Frank. But my offroad time, or in this case lack of it, doesn't justify this modification anyway. I had auto diesel before and much easier offroad. But on bitumen they seem more sluggish than manual.

Always since i bought it few months ago. Lag seems to go away even before turbo kicks in so i'm suspecting something else. I'll have to do bit of general overhaul in the engine bay anyway so I'll do intercooler and injectors at the time. Boost and egr installation is pending due to lack of time. Got all the bits tough. Hopefully soon!

Check your vacuum line at rear of turbo - the line comes from the injector pump, across the rear of the engine, joins the tubo inlet, then 't' branches to boost control. The boost control line is short and is hard to see - split mine when I jagged it replacing starter motor. Engine was slow to pick up from standing (more than the usual lag), then would gradually climb to about 80km/hr after which the engine power seemed 'flat' - would eventually climb to 100km/hr or more, but no reserve power response when you hit the accelerator peddle. Mine's a Tdi300 auto. Once I fixed the vacuum line and tweeked the kickdown then everything went back to normal.
