To know if your turbo is working and how well it's working.
Fair enough. But not really necessaty for egt monitoring. Right?

No, however boost and EGT are inversely related. So if your boost is lower than it should be, your EGTs will be high. If you can't measure boost to know it is too low you would instead be likely to turn the fuel down to lower EGT...

And with a manual you can clutch out at higher rpm. Same result.

I get a pretty good launch from my manual 4BD1T from clutching out at 2000rpm. I don't want to try it at higher rpm.

Doesn't the boost compensator mean that if boost was low at high revs, then not as much fuel would be allowed? Meaning if boost is low, then IP would not be allowed to use full fuel.

Or is the boost compensator at fully open with only a small amount of boost? (IE it's purpose is mostly to reduce fuel at NO boost).

The boost compensator on these should be proportional up to about 15psi. The gauges are to tell you what isn't working properly.

A ripped boost compensator on most engines means it doesn't move and give you full fuel until you're on full boost. The hole off idle gets bigger and bigger and drivability really takes a hit.
