Sounds like the usual ignition module - if still on the side of the dissy definitely replace (earlier models)and if a later model it will be remote form the dissy (near the coil I think) and may be worth while replacing as well.

Hi All, just wondering if anyone knows of a good mobile land rover expert around my area, I'm still scratching my head over my temperamental disco1, had an auto elec/mech come by over three days with a boat load of diagnostic equipment and still no joy, just a hole in my wallet, he wants to cart it off to a workshop for testing, to be honest I cant afford someone to learn as they fix it, so now I'm looking for cold hard experience!
Just seems like there isn't a strong enough spark to start with, today I've tried three coils (1 old, 1 from a working Disco and 1 new), all the same very weak orange spark jumping max of 5-10mm, I've finally come to the conclusion I just don't have the skill to troubleshoot this.
Just dying to get the old girl running again, as i cant drive her its a mobile service i need, I'm happy to do the bolt on work, i also have the parts to do Bee_uty's conversion if that would help the issue!!..... even have a shiny new Ecu-mate for further diagnostics once shes alive.
Just as a side note, she was running fine until she sat for a couple of months.
Makes me miss my old 2a....she sat for years under a tarp, started second go with a new tank of fuel and a fresh battery!!
Cheers
John

What Garry said. But also check all plugs and connections before sending her away. It sounds like something fairly simple, but just has to be found.....
For the sake of maybe an hour, have a look around for a loose connector or dirty connections.
Check ALL earths. Including the mounting point for the coil and its associated wiring.![]()
Well, followed Bee_utys modification instructions, got the BIM024 in (Pic attached), took out the dizzy to remove the ignition module, was easier than breaking my fingers!, and finally have a resemblance of a spark!, not enough yet but something, see video clip attached.
In the third pic there is a shot of the dizzy, does the spade on the left nest to the blue plug need to be attached somewhere?
Thanks!
The spade lug is for an earth connection, you could use it to connect a shield around the pickup to module wiring, either coaxial cable or make a foil shield under an outer wrap but I don't normally bother. Just keep the pickup wires away from the alternator or the other wiring to prevent it from picking up interference. I often just tie this wiring to the top radiator hose.
On the subject of spark strength, I hope you are using a suitable electronic coil with a low resistance primary, not just some generic points coil. Also the type of plug leads is important, a spiral wire (inductive core) type will give the best spark energy transfer.
Using a new Lucas RTC5628, that's what the shop said was the right one for my model, i might splash out on a MEC723 or 717 if its going to offer a massive gain in spark strength with the 024?
