SNAPPED COOLANT TUBE NEXT TO THERMOSTAT

What seemed a minor leak from a little hose is now a pregnant manifold on my v8. Tucked away behind the temp sensors it is/was. It looks like some sort of throttle body warmer maybe? I've heard of these, being blocked by people, intentionally. Anyway does anyone know if this is plausible or do I just start replacing the manifold? I think the broken tube being moulded into aluminium equals buggered but thought I'd ask. If I don't remove the valley cover could I re use it hopefully? Someone please say yes! So please all wish me luck and few grazed knuckles and any tips along the way. Hi Ho Hi Ho off to garage I go

Dismantle enough stuff, possibly distributor out, drill the fitting out with an 11/32" drill bit, tap it to 1/8" BSPT and fit a brass hose nipple to match 8mm/5/16" heater hose. Run a hose directly from the new fitting to the top of the radiator without passing through the throttle body heater. The hose is important for maintaining a small flow out of the top of the engine with the thermostat closed.

A suitable tap and nipple should be obtainable at any decent engineering/plumbing store or ask Brian Hjelm on here if he's got one in stock.

bee utey, I love your work. Seems easier and sounds cheaper to boot. I'm glad I read your post now not later. Would I then hose together the two pipes under the throttle body to keep the bugs out? TIA I will keep you posted with my progress, why is this set up even there, does cold fuel not ignite?

Doh, it's a throttle body heater not a fuel heater. It's to stop the throttle blade icing up in sub zero conditions, eg in snow country.

Yeah of course, I knew that. Not done yet as needed to buy brass fitting then found had to buy new BSPT tap ($27) so tomorrow will be done. I am nervous about tapping aluminium but guess I can't really make it worse.

Penetrating oil (WD40 etc) makes quite adequate tapping fluid for cast ally.

All done, thanks bee utey....I'm sorry not to have pics to document it step by step but in hindsight it was surprisingly easy. My base idle is higher although I assume that's because I didn't use sealant on the plenum/ram but I am a happy to save time and money and learn something new.
