Make sure you mark which bolt came out of which hole. There's a couple of different sizes, and if you try and put them in the wrong position, you be in trouble.
Pump is now leaking from the vent hole on the drivers side and from somewhere underneath that I can't see in the dark. Looking at it, it looks like it's the original pump from 225,000 kms ago which seems like a decent life span. So this weekend is RnR time.
From the WSM this looks like it should be straightforwards, but.....
Any gotchas I should be aware of ? What is going to bite me in the bum when I least expected it.

And preferably get new bolts. 16+ year old bolts holding a water pump on....
That was one of my concerns, however I do have both M6 and M8 helicoils to hand (haven't worked out what size the bolts actually are - they just look like bolts in the dark), and I have a mate with left handed drill bits. Looks like I break out the acetone and ATF on Friday night.
At the moment the coolant consumption is approximately 100L/100km. Good thing my trip to the station is only 1km.
Oh and another thing - I have the new water pump in my hand - why does the drive flange for the Viscous coupler have three tapped holes for what looks like M8 bolts when according to the manual the VC is fixed on with one big nut ?
And yet another thing this water pump impeller looks tiny - the ones on my Porsche 928s (5.0L V8) are approx twice the diameter, a much tighter tolerance to the pump body and have curved vanes that are about twice the depth which would suggest approx twice the flow rate.
Well the pump came off easily enough, and no sheared bolts - in fact all but one looked like new. The old gasket is being a bit more stubborn.
Three hours later the old gasket succumbed to superior force. 30 minutes after that the new pump was installed and the engine running. Spray on Gasket remover helped a bit but wasn't the miracle cure I hoped it might be. (Dreaming, I thought I would spray it, on wait 15 minutes and the gasket would have fallen off leaving a nice clean aluminium surface ready for the new gasket and pump. Clearly I was dreaming) Now to see if there are any more leaks.
