    Which Disco?

    Another one of these posts...

    I'd like some advice please and I'm not looking to compare the D1 with the D2 but I have a certain amount of money and am in a position to buy either a;

    1/ 300tdi 97 SE Model D1 impeccable service history +320,000 km

    2/ V8 2001 Model D2 impeccable service history 240,000 km

I will be doing a fair bit of highway mileage and fairly easy off road work (e.g. muddy paddocks). The 300tdi is mint. I realise I am in the D1 forum but if I could get a balanced opinion from people who have driven both that would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

Some Discos around 2001 didn't have transfer case locking internals, instead relying on electronic traction control, it was eventually reinstated, so I would check that out first.
The V8 is much more powerful and has more room in the back. The 300TDi will cruise all day at the legal limits and will return 8/9L/100klms., is better off road (less overhang and ramp over), less space in the rear, no computer to run the engine, you didn't say whether Manual or Automatic box, my preference is Auto in both, Good luck, Regards Frank.

Balanced? not having ever owned a rattler---

You would need to check the D2 service history for all sorts of things,,
if the TDi has had the belt problem fixed and the cooling system serviced,,
The Tdi will be worth the same amount of money in another ten years,,
    the V8?

I have owned both, Disco 2 nothing but trouble with electronic traction control and ABS, sensors failed etc etc, sold it and went back to a Disco 1 300 tdi, less electronic to go wrong good honest machine. Also have a 200 tdi, even better. Dave

I love my V8s, but a late model TDi D1 with that sought of service history is about as good as it gets

This is great advice. I've only ever owned a 2 door 3.5 V8 which I worked on a fair bit and I'd like to be able to do my own servicing on the vehicle as well so that is a plus for the 300tdi.

At 320K if the history is as stated then its only just run in - 300TDI.
I wouldnt buy a V8 again unless it was only a weekend warrior or TDV8.

    Thumbs up tdi

I would go with the TDi, it is slow , economical to run and maintain. Plenty of parts reasonably priced, well maintained units have recorded very high kilometers . I personally avoid V8s unless you have plenty of cash for O&M. They are much cheaper to buy than diesels for a reason. I would also consider a D-2 , Td-5 they are getting cheap, and it's a lot of car for the money.

The D2 is a great unit as it has a lot more space inside, the V8 goes well but likes fuel and you won't get the life out of it like a diesel. They run 18inch wheels.
D1 is a good vehicle for the paddock work as the diesel will just chug along all day with no dramas and return good fuel economy. They run 16inch wheels.
It is always a personal choice but I agree with the other post I saw and if you can get a D2 with diesel that has had the standard large service issues done then that is what I would go for as the td5 has more go in it.

Thanks all. I'm picking up the 300tdi today. The shallow side of me was attracted to the D2 but unfortunately the TD5 while great value is about 4-5k out of reach. Advice on the 300tdi as above was what I wanted to hear.
