    96'tdi Door lock issue.

Hey fellas, I've run into a problem with my Disco and would appreciate some advice,

Originally when i beeped my car with the fob all the locks would lock and unlock as they're meant too.

Then after a little while all the doors would unlock no problem, but when i tried to lock the car, the drivers door would not lock - the external part that sticks up out of the door would wiggle and depress slightly and then pop back up. This means i lock the car with the key.

Today when locking the drivers door there was a pop/crack sound and sensation and the key turned but the door did not lock. Now it will turn freely without locking or unlocking the car =/

This means i cant lock my driver side door which is a bit of an issue.

I can still lock/unlock all the other doors with the fob no problem.

Any ideas on what i need to fix or replace?

    Cheers,

    Paul

    Hi,

The first problem sounds like a failed spring in the latch or a failed door actuator(both common problems), the key spinning would be a rod disconnected or the plastic cam on the back of the lock broken, Discovery doors are pretty easy to work on so maybe take the door card off and take a look.
Where about's in Perth are you? Maybe someone could help out??

Last week I replaced the spring in a passengers front door latch. It took 2 hrs to remove the mirror, get the door frame out, the glass out and, just to get at the latch and remove it. It then took 2 minutes to change the spring. After replacing the window mechanism that had a damaged roller, another 4 hours to put it all back again. So after 5 years of pulling the knob up to open the door, its all fixed. What a fiddle (or words to that effect) of a job!.

Ok so I've taken the door liner off from the inside and taken a peek inside. I think my problem is twofold.

I think the black thing (Actuator??) which responds to the dongle and locks the doors is busted or partially busted as when i press the button its closes then pops right back open. (Pic 1) Which would explain why all the doors lock except the drivers when i press the button.

Problem two, the plastic surrounding the lock which turns with the key and then pulls the rod up/down to lock the car has broken (see pics) do i need a whole new lock?

Would it be easier to just buy a whole new door from a wrecker/someone on here? Does anyone have a white drivers door that they want to sell? I want to get her fixed and ready to go asap.

    Cheers for all your help

    Paul

    G'day PerthPT,
I dunno about WA, but here in Vic, there are some self server wreckers.
Get yourself a new bit for the Exterior door handle. That will also help with any practice you may need before working on your own Vehicle.
When that problem is sorted, get yourself a whole new Central Locking system off Ebay or JB Hi Fi, or wherever, and fit that. ($40-$80 for a remote locking kit)
Run all the wiring supplied with the kit, and you will never have an issue.
(Don't rely on the Pink and Grey factory wiring)
These German solenoids that are fitted to Classic Rangies and Discos were good in the day, but are now ****e, and will let you down. Don't go to all that trouble, just to have one of those Solenoids fail two weeks later.(in another door!)
If one door has failed you can be sure another is coming up soon.
I speak from experience. It is not worth the time and effort to stuff around with all the door handle and locking linkages time and time again.
You do NOT need a new door.
Once you sort out the Locking, it will give you time to work on something else that will fail........... Promise!

Cheers for the reply discovery39, sounds like some good advice.

Just to double check, since i'm a bit of a novice haha.

You mean I should rustle up a new external handle/lock unit for the drivers door, take out the old one and replace it? I'm guessing ill need the new key that fits it too right? My local supercheap said they could get me a replacement for the plastic bit that broke, would that be better or should i just not bother stuffing around with it?

Then I buy a new remote central locking unit and rewire+install the new actuators into each door? (This sound like a good idea anyway since my wireless has a range of about half a meter when it works at all =P)

Otherwise could i just forget the lock for now and install a new remote central unit? Just in case i cant find/fix the lock in the near future?

I guess i should put new springs into each external handle while i'm at it....

    Thoughts?

    Again cheers for the help.

Replacing the complete central locking system is a great idea.
There's a facebook page for spare Landy parts here in Perth so try that or maybe West Coast Rover in Kenwick for a spare handle, don't worry about the key to much just take both handle's to a locksmith and they can swap parts to get it too suit your old key, I hear Lighthouse Locksmiths in Canning Vale know about Landys

    Cheers

If you can get yourself another External Handle with all the bits still attached, then that would be better. You can swap over the Lock so you can still use your Key. You will just need to fiddle around a bit swapping the necessary bits over.
It's good that you can get another Plastic bit, but I wouldn't bother. With all the effort of putting the new bit on, you will/may find, that something else will break inside. It could last a week, or it could last years. It's one of those things.
Yep, put an entirely new system in it. You will also find, that a new Solenoid will negate the need for New springs. All the after market Solenoids I have seen, have enough force to move the locking rods (and hold them there).
The New Solenoids are purely an up/down type deal. The German factory ones, are floppy, and need the springs on Various rods and Linkages to help hold them into either the up or down position.
