    300tdi towing

I know this is probably done to death but I have a stock 300tdi 5spd and am looking at building up a camp/bike 7x4 box trailer how do the old girls go towing ? I'm looking to be posted to the nt next year n want to know how it will go towing at higher speeds 100-130kph (I doubt the 130 will be an option just quietly )

At the higher speeds and towing your fuel economy will go out the window and up that way the fuel is also more expensive so not a good combination. They will tow ok but not like the V8 but at a more conservative speed will do it all day, good fuel economy and don't have to watch the temp gauge as closely.

As has been stated above. Towing at higher speeds with the 300TDi is unlikely to happen, also heat and fuel consumption will go up massively.

Mate I did the drive from Brisbane to Perth (same reason as your move), the coolest day I had was 42. I towed a trailer of approx 650kg. The disco drove beautifully, really didn't notice the trailer on there all that much, except for the added fuel consumption and heat.

I drove most of the way sitting around the 95kph mark. I found the difference between 90kph and 100kph was up to 2L/100km, depending on the terrain up to 250degrees higher EGT's. Going over 100kph was just not going to happen, those figures went through the roof!

I will admit, I had a tiny whole in an intercooler hose that I found out about after getting to Perth so the figures were exaggerated. However, you will 100% use more fuel and have higher EG/water/oil temps. 130kph... I wouldn't risk it. Take your time.

Besides, you will get given HEAPS of time to drive up there! Trust me. I find that I can normally do the drive in about a third of the time they allow for you. Though you "aren't supposed to."

Thanks for all the replies ,I would think by the end of the day the trailer would be around the 1000kg mark I'm not fixed on doing 'lightspeed' towing but with the normal bolt ons i.e. intercooler upgrade and center muffler removed n a tune to suit plus egt gauge would you guys think it would handle 100-110kph towing ,I've got the low coolant alarm that's a start.

I'll be taking my time on the trip but once I'm up there I wanna be able to cruise at a decent speed to the good camp sites

Mate yeah that sounds alright. You should be able to sit on 100kph without any worries I reckon.

Got to love posting time. Gives you a chance to visit some places on the way that you wouldn't normally get to because of the distance.

Im greedy and can do all three. Just not with fuel economy and the EGT's are a lot less happy on the hills.
