    V8I buying advice

    G'day all

I'm having a look at a 1997 V8I auto Saturday and I'm after anything major to look out for and I am aware of the fuel consumption, by that I mean clunks, oil leaks etc etc. Vehicle is very straight and neat with dual fuel as well. Any tips gratefully accepted.

    Cheers
    Barry

    Hi
Other than the usual issues that would apply to any petrol engine one of the more common and often most difficult issues is the erratic idle.Chances are if you can get one that has a solid idle and and runs well your on your way to purchasing a vehicle that has been maintained properly.
In saying that the problem can be fixed but may be a frustrating experience or alternatively expensive one if you farm it out to a mechanic.

Need I repeat myself? This is the big issue. Anything wrong and the cylinder liners can move and that'll cost a full rebuild.

Rust around the Alpine windows and even if they look OK, open the back doors and have a look at the body seams at the top of the wheel arch.

Rust along the top of the front windscreen. you may see drip marks down the inside of the screen from the top.

Make sure all the electric windows work (particularly the back ones)

Does it have a remote and does it operate the central locking

Does the key go into and operate the ignition smoothly.

Suspension bushes and A-frame joint. Noisy CV joints. Has it been lifted (affects steering goemetry)

The white radiator expansion tanks are less prone to failure than the black ones. Does it have coolant in it or just water.

    Does the heater work.

    The usual oil leaks.

Does the auto go into gear and change smoothly. IIRC, the TC should lockup around the 80 kph mark.

As Bee Utey said - check the coolant system and make sure it hasn't been overheated - it will be toast if it has. I would also check the compression if you have the tools. I've seen badly set up LPG systems kill these engines.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Mileage is also a big factor for the RV8, anything over 200K it enters the realm of worn camshaft lobes. Over 250K its almost a definite replacement item and may as well do head gaskets at the same time.

The d1 was a little more forgiving than the d2 v8 to heat. They are a very nice bit of kit.

Now the owner of a 1997 Disco V8, runs well on both petrol and gas. Very clean and straight and has full service history. Few problems need sorting will get them done in the coming weeks, speaking of which anyone know of any being wrecked in the Hobart area? As a bonus it came with the owners manual, going to scan it in coming days so if anyone needs a copy drop me a line or as an alternative if someone wants to host it I'll send it to them for sharing.
