    D1 electrical woes!

So its a nice 1997 D1 300tdi. With some weird electrical problems. Ok so not so nice. As of this morning every time I use my right indicator the following happens.

Central locking engages. Sometimes only down, sometimes up and down in time with the indicator!
The following also all go up and down or get brighter and dim in time with the indicator.
The brake light and auto temp light.
    Both the tacho and speedo.
    The dash lights.
    The interior lights.
    The temp guage.
And the low fuel light randomly stays on until I hit the indicator again. At which point it goes out.

Previously the only sign of any elec fault was the EGT guage would sometimes drop 300 degrees when high beam was on and my temp gauge would rise a quarter of the scale with high beam. Add another quarter for spotties, another for light bar. Goes down to normal (sic) when lights are off. Now much as I like to see my dash dancing in time (with the right music playing) I need to get this fixed. Any thoughts. It has both me and my auto elecy stumped. Thanks for the help!

    Regards,
    Lane

Repair or duplicate the earth cables between the body and the engine. The battery and alternator are earthed to the engine, everything else to the body. This is a quite common problem and I'm surprised your auto elec hasn't gone for the earthing system. All other earth points to the body should be checked and cleaned too. You may need the workshop manual to find them all.

I will back what bee utey has said. Earthing is a really common issue that will cause symptoms similar to this. Not only on D1s, but many cars, I have seen it heaps. No offence, but I think you need a new auto electrician, because one worth his weight would gone straight to it being an earth issue as soon as you described it.

For mine, I added an extra earth from each of my batteries to the body, but between the engine and body is probably the better of the choices. From the battery was just simpler for me to do, I'm lazy like that.

You will find one extra cable or strap will improve things dramatically. If you can, check over the existing ones, especially the straps. There are a couple in some not so obvious places, so the Rave is usually pretty helpful there.

    Good luck

Thanks heaps guys. It does sound like an earth fault but I have never played with the earths in my Disco! (Now IN earth is another thing) I'm too lazy or too tired from fixing the other things so I thought I'll just wait for the expert opinion on this forum before I go spend my precious time playing sparky! Liberty, its not really the auto elec fault now that I think of it. When I spoke to him on the phone some of the symptoms hadn't shown themselves yet! Although in his 45 years as a sparky he hadn't seen the indicator lock the doors! Also he mentioned way back early last year when I queried him about the temp gauge that it was probably an earth fault behind the dash. Pretty sure he was thinking electronic/ECU problems. Plus he doesn't like Landies. He does do a good job on our Peugeots, Citroens and toymotors though! I'll get under the hood tomorrow and re-attach the earths, one I know of is pretty greasy/oily. Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated.
