    300tdi exhaust

have my disco at the exhaust shop to fix a leak (by doing a straight through system) the exhaust shop guy who has a 90 and is a pom and seems to know his stuff (we used to use him for our 4wd fleet when i was working in that industry) suggest instead of removing the middle silencer and putting a performance rear, i was better off putting performance middle muffler and just a straight through pipe from there out to the back.

his reasoning was that, you still get the same restriction as you only have one hi flow muffler in the system but you improve your angle of attack in the rear and also you are less likely to get water sitting in the muffler and rusting it out. said the middle one is in a better position for 4wding.

this guy has a good reputation so i kinda trust him. just wanted to know what you guys on here think of this. i've looked the forum and also others on the interweb but i only found one where someone suggested similar. every post is always about removing the centre can. maybe just because of ease?

    thanks,

    Larry

i reckon remove centre and leave resonator at the back.........that's what I should have done on my defender instead I have a straight through no muffler/resonator.

I left my resonator in place, as its straight through anyway and has no resistance - with the centre I used a straight through muffler, which is basically the same as removing the original but prevents the drone, which I have heard might happen with no muffler at all.

    done

it's all done now. the middle one is a straight through performance muffler and after that it's a pipe all the way back. he said the middle one won't affect flow, its pretty much a 2.5 system all the way though.

little bit louder but not uncomfortable and the turbo sure spools a lot faster.

got an ems-1 system coming soon so i'll install that and then play a bit with the pump. after that she should be good for a while.

    just to add to that

i changed the low manifold pressure (smoke screw) on the weekend, after the new exhaust was in. made a pretty cool difference. drives much better around the streets and turbo spins very freely. once i get ems-1 ill play with other fuel pump tweaks.

i have not seen many threads on it. middle hi-flow muffler and straight through pipe at the back. i'll post some pics of it on weekend on here. there is not much at the back now that can hit rocks etc. and the middle muffler is well protected all around from the car.

    it runs really well.

just a thought for anyone doing exhaust work in the future.
