You could connect the switch to the brake lights so it only charges when braking.

Really its not such a bad idea if you are really concerned about fuel economy.
You could also rig up a relay that connects when overriding eg Throttle closed when coasting down hills.
The new eco cars do this.
In my twilight times between sleep and awake, I used to ponder why not set up a wind generator to charge a camper trailer battery while driving. Aren't wind generators the going thing these days? I wonder what the balance is between added air resistance and generation.
You could maybe set up the radiator electric fans to generate while the car is moving also. Most don't realise that they are spinning madly from the wind when you move along.
Just a few random thoughts.
