    Change Alarm

Rather than spending big $$ on buying another fob, could I just take out the keyless entry/alarm system and replace it with a better version from, say, Jaycar?

    eg:
Steelmate Car Alarm - Basic - Jaycar Electronics

Did it on my wife's mazda - new install, incorporated existing central locking from driver's door switch), on my sister's celica, replacement for "dealer" installed one that nobody , including dealers, never heard of, did one on my 60 series, new install, one on my bike (no central locking on this one ), including shock sensor. They were all ebay ones cca $50-150. Never ever had a single problem with any of them!!!

It's all about matching your wiring if you are replacing the system. Bit of patience, a multimeter, couple of wire links, and off you go. you can make a little pluggable adaptor so you don't mess up your wiring too much.

Not a bad idea, that I should have thought about; before I cut and soldered all the wires on the numerous jobs I did before today.

Just had my alarm code changed and a new OEM fob supplied with the remaining original fob recoded after some slimy F****** individuals stole my keys and 97 disco.
Work was done by All4x4 in Newcastle total cost of $176. Only took 45mins and very happy with the result.
Also had the 3 doors and ignition rekeyed for $350 by another local company who couldn't have done a better job..
I would stick with the original system if its only an issue with the remote fob.

No sorry cant say I do however that said any reputable Landie service center with the equipment should have no more trouble doing the job than the company that did mine.
Best of luck I think its your best option.

I have thought of doing this myself. Some time ago I put a Rhino alarm & central locking in a Hilux ute. The alarm has some nice features & worked well.
To fit an alarm to a Disco1, would this replace the troublesome spider? Sounds like a good idea to me. I need to get my head around how it is done. Would like to hear your ideas. My Disco is Sept95 build. No computer to complicate things.
    Regards,
    Michael

Isn't the LR one a rolling remote meaning the frequency changes every time it is locked, whereas a lot of the aftermarket ones use the same code every tme and so are easily opened by thieves?

DiscoMick, The Rhino alarm [RCX1] I was thinking of has "Remote Code Hopping technology". I assume this is what you mean.
My remote has not worked for a while. I thought a new system that bypasses the spider would be a good way to go. To eliminate the spider would involve pulling out the dash assembly & I was hoping to put this off until the A/conditioner needs replacing.
Thanks for your replies, its good to have someone out there to bounce things off.
