Petrol (with lpg) v Diesel Discovery

    Hi Discovery boys and girls,

Having seen its off road capabilities I'm after advice on purchasing a Discovery.

I think I've got it right in considering the D1 as being the most rugged and simple of all the Discovery models?

Here's the plan, the Discovery will be used:
    mainly as my wife's car (I have a P38)
    On the farm
Off Road adding larger wheels, winch etc
As a tow vehicle for our 'van
    Lots of camping
As a bit of a workhorse
    On our farm

My wife requires an auto so how do petrol and diesel versions stack up?

is the 3.9 a rugged and dependable motor? Does it suffer on lpg? Does it suffer liner slip and overheating? Does the Discovery have a multitude of electronics like the P38 (becm etc) is the diesel simpler to maintain?

What are the weak spots apart from cooling?

I've had loads of LRs but never a Discovery. I absolutely love my P38 so I'm not afraid of a little hard work.

    Thanks,
    Jonathan

D1 V8's thrive on gas without any real issues apart from backfiring due to poor tuning. However many D1s get loose liners somewhere around the 250,000 km mark. The engine electronics are fairly simple, the auto trans is totally hydraulic and the immobiliser is an optional accessory that is easy to remove or bypass. No BCM. With the recent cost rises of LPG expect running costs to still be slightly higher than a 300Tdi. Range on LPG will be quite short, around 300km per tank at most. Weaknesses at this age include rusted floors due to leaking windows, also heater core failure. Mechanical parts are relatively cheap and easy to get second hand, via private wrecking.

Do the 3.9s suffer the porous block issues like the 4.0 in the P38?

If so, is it feasible to top hat the liners?

I hear quite a bit about the 3 amigos, does this apply to D1s? If so, what are the issues?

Liking the response so far, seems a lot more straightforward than my P38

No mexicans in a D1, yes top hats are feasible but expensive.

    I have a '95 V8.
I love the power and sound, wish i had a tdi for the range and economy.
The V8 has been very cheap to service and maintain. The most expensive was about $500 for a head gasket and head machining.
Electrics can be annoying, but are very cheap to fix or repair.
With lpg make sure you replace the plastic air box with a round steel one from a early Disco or RRC, saves drama's if it does backfire, which if it is tuned properly is rare.
