    vacuum pump removal

    97 300tdi

5 of the 6 bolts come out easily, of course number 6 is a problem as the crankcase breather pipe is almost flush up against it and the more nut you unscrew the tighter it gets!

I'm sure I could get it off but worried about getting it back on. Is it necessary or advisable to remove the breather pipe prior to the pump? If so any tricks to doing it??

    thanks for any feedback

I just used a 1/4 " socket set to get that bolt out out, its tight but doable.
When re fitting use 2 gaskets as this is supposed to help prolong its life, although mine has 330K on it .

I do remember that being tight. Pretty sure I ended up undoing the breather hose. It's just a hose clamp right? No problem removing and refitting if that makes it easier.

thanks guys, I had a go at the breather pipe, of course one bolt was easy and the other one a bastard so back to the vac pump which finally came out, lucked in that the camshaft lobe is not protruding so hopefully refit will be OK.

Have to do lift pump as well, workshop manual says to remove all injection pipes prior to removal but the stuff I've seen on line doesnt mention that.

Given the trouble I had with the vac pump access I'm thinking I may as well move them. Are re- torque values critical as I dont have crows feet to use with a torque wrench? What about the torque values for the pumps themselves as I cant see how I can fit a torque wrench in there either!
