Question Getting SPARE set of Keys cut for a Disco-1?

    Gents....

The Disco I've recently purchased only came with one Key. I'd like to get a couple of spare Keys cut, but I'm unsure if its a simple job of going down to the local locksmith or whether there's the Key contain's a Chip in the plastic head for the immobilizer?? I don't know if a 96 Disco has a immobilizer or not, so I thought I would ask here......

    cheers...

No chip in the head of D1 keys so a locksmith would be able to sort you out, see if they can decode and CNC cut the new one rather than copy all the wear from your old key onto the new one.
There is a chip in the keyfob/remote, there are instructions for programming this on rave,

    Thanks

A LR dealer should be able to give you the key number (might need proof of ownership) & then the locksmith can use that to cut your new key.

Also, try to get same length key as original. I made shorter copy and its frustrating unlocking the doors. Especially if you have buch of other keys on same ring.

    Question

I spoke to a locksmith about it and he questioned me if the key had a "Plastic" head on the end & I said "yes". He then indicated that there is a fair chance that it might contain a electronic chip for the engine immobiliser..... Would this be correct for a 96/97 Disco Tdi ??

To me it just looks like a normal key.....

The key is just a key. The electronics are in the remote fob itself.

If you don't have a remote fob & have been unloking the car with the key, then you may not have an alarm/immobilizer fitted.

Nah mate. It's just plastic 'handle' no chip inside. I got mine done at local market. So you shouldn't have problems getting one made up.

I work at a Locksmith and the chipped keys became a requirement by law in 96. It is a bit of a hit and miss for some cars around this time. If you go to a proper locksmith (not a Cobblers Key or something similar in a shopping center) they will have a machine that can check if your key has a chip in it

The first Disco to have a 'chip' in the key itself was the D2 which came out in 1999.
I've never heard of a 'chipped key' being law - several Discos between 1996 & 1999 didn't even have an immobilizer.

I hope this is the case and it's a simple case of going down to the local locksmiths and get a couple cut.....
