    300tdi power boost

After much procrastination & changing my mind approx. 400 times, I have decided not to upgrade to a D2 & stick with my trusty old 95 tdi (besides, SWMBO said I can't spend too much money).
I'd like to try and extract a bit more power from the old girl without sacrificing fuel economy (if possible). It's used as a daily driver (sometimes with a trailer), and will also soon be used as a tourer. Currently, as far as I can tell, it's a standard 300tdi manual with nearly 400k on the clock.
I'm looking for cheaper / better value mods to start with as the budget is quite limited.
Also, a shout out to any other Tassie members who may have some time & experience to spare that would be willing to teach me a few of the basics when it comes to swinging the spanners on the disco :-)

    Cheers, Paul

Do you know what work has been done to the engine in the past? At 400k km I would be starting to budget for a full engine rebuild.

E.g. see: Turner Engineering - Replacement and Remanufacturer of Land Rover Engines including 300TDI, 200TDI, TD5, V8, turbo diesel & petrol etc, available from stock

Before you start doing any mods, fit an EGT sensor and low water alarm.

Yeah, I know the old truck has a lot of k's on her. Wasn't going to worry about a rebuild at this stage as it's still running quite well (I just would like a bit more power). I should have mentioned - I am running an Engine Watchdog TM1 temp/oil pressure sensor already...

I got one of these on my 95, with a straight through centre muffler and fuelling to match, it made quite a bit of difference - I also tow a fair amount for work. Definitely get an EGT gauge, it will help with tuning and prevent over heating the turbo.Without its kind of a guessing game. Mine has over 430K km on it with a new head and other engine bits and goes well - you don't need to go all out at once, just plan it out. I would: 1. EGT 2. Muffler 3. Fuel adjustment 4. Intercooler 5. Fuel adjustment again based on any EGT changes

    Hi paul,
some of those parts on the disco look familiar .
As others have said remove centre muffler, fit an egt gauge and have a read on fuel pump tweaks.
Something like this would be a good starting point.
Digital EGT Gauge with TC-KEGT Probe [Combo-EGT] - $86.00 : auberins.com, Temperature control solutions for home and industry

You still need an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) sensor if you want to mod the motor. Your exhaust gas temp can get high enough to melt things before the water or oil temps have risen enough to notice.

    Question

Curious.... What is the most common thread / probe that people use with these? I assume the clamp on one is not the one to get due to possible leaks? So what thread type should one get?

The 300tdi conveniently comes with a plate in the perfect spot:

You just need to drill and tap it for a swagelok-type fitting - the probe goes through the middle and you tighten the nut to seal.

I was in the same predicament - wanted to upgrade my D1 of 7 years to something else with a bit more power (was thinking of 1HDFTE troopy). In the end I went down the VNT path and it's really transformed the car. Provided it holds together I'd now be happy to keep the car another 5 years.

Best part - saved enough money by not upgrading to buy a brand spanking BMW Motorrad
