I'm just about to tick over 400k in my tdi. After looking at all the options I decided to stick with the old girl - simple, reliable & plenty of spares around.
Also comfortable on long trips & great off-road - what more do you need?? :-)

I have been contemplating this very issue??

My 1997 Disco 300TDi Auto now has 505,000 on it and I have owned it from new. Never had an accident, original windscreen. I am totally happy with this car however the good wife has hinted that I should maybe consider an upgrade.

I replaced the head at 420,000 which started with a waterpump with the blades worn off and occasional overheating. this led to the head gasket blowing at the back of the motor near the firewall. Once the head came off it was still hard however there were hairline cracks between the injectors and the valve seats.
The new heads wasnt that expensive and it has been running brilliantly since. And as said above a consumable item.

It has had the ususal consumables, waterpump, powersteering pump was about 15,000ks ago. Alternator was about 120,000 back.

I love driving this and have looked around but cant find anything I can comfartably fit in and like more. I am not prepared to fork out $65,000 for a car I dont really like. I really like the mechanical nature of the 300tdi. I am thinking like Robbo said above, of looking around for a low kilometer one and migrate all the accessories across to that. but not quite yet.

I will be continuing to service and update mine as it is way cheaper and easier than buying an electronic 4wd.

To do list next service is springs and bushes front and rear. The Bilsteins are still working fine.

    Im heading toward a million . . . .

so whats better than an old D1 ?...TWO D1's....
both my discos are still licenced...both still working well, new auto looks better and goes well, can't bring myself to sacrifice manwell for parts as was first intention but just ordered new tyres and going bush for 10 days in my old disco....
will keep improving my "new" auto and defer scrapping old faithful for the moment.

I REALLY love having two discos in the shed (retirement has its benefits) and its still cheaper than a new i-car...
