Yep, you're right. I did mine a few years ago, and as I tried to remove the nut, the stud came out instead. Long end on the nut side, as the thread protrudes out from the nut by about 10mm or so.

if it's just to get to the mechanic, I reckon any thread locker compound may do the job, just let it dry properly. Note that all the thread locker is really supposed to do is stop the stud from trying to tighten any more than you do it up to .. which is very lightly to begin with.

    How far is the mechanic?
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

    About 30km
I have put the stud in with a heap of locker and plan to put it together lunch time tomorrow.
I will put minimal torque on it and cross my fingers it will get me there. Will leave fan and ac belt off. I guess if it gives way i can .....get it flat bedded😳

Lovely drive there. On the way back I was coming into Merton in the wire rope barrier bit with a car right up my jacksy and a currawong takes off in front of me. I can't swerve because of the wire rope. Can't brake suddenly because of the douche bag up my rear.

And whammo. Takes out the damn headlight, indicator and headlight surround. Which is essentially the whole grille. Am I cursed?

So will need a new headlight or fibreglass/epoxy up the back of it (glass is ok but rear is broken), new indicator and new grille. Jesus bloody Christ! And my first drive in a month because of lockdown!
For the right coin there is a disco the same model at Doon Pub

Refitted injector pump after removing it to replace a leaking head seal, and finding a broken plunger return spring in the process.no markings on pump, so turned into a bit of a drama to source replacements.
New cam belt, idlers, seals and water pump, flush radiator and intercooler while I was there……. Split a turbo to intercooler hose the next day 🤣

Checked timing after doin fuel pump/cam belt…… was sitting at 1.4mm plunger lift @ tdc…… reset to 1.6mm……. Seems like it has a bit more go, egt’s down a tad and bit more torque down low off idle.

    viscous clutch!
Of course it's Christmas break period and all stores closed, so clutch gets all loosey goosey, gorgeous better half requires refrigeration(lest I don't hear the end of it) ... and coolant temps reach for the stars!

No option other than to lock it up solid, which is OK as a bush fix, but I don't like it as an urban fix, but you gotta do ... etc ...

    20221227_162431_sml.jpg

Anyhow ... not a great fix, but at least the tdi maintained it's cool for a while, till a new calamity unfolded itself ... fan undid itself!
Obviously not ideal, and even worse was ... not realising it till she got hot under the collar again for seemingly no reason.

Kind'a all good as at least the fan didn't go flying all over the engine bay and cause unimaginable damage, it was just sitting, having a bit of a break against the rad.
I'm thinking that it must have come undone when the motor is shut off, and the inertia of the fan wants to undo itself ... or something.

I'll get a new one tomorrow(I think the stores are open).

But .. as I've pretty much always suspected:
I reckon the fan hardly does anything on my TDi, in that I believe it's been freewheeling for some time. Motor hardly ever gets 'hot' .. and normal coolant temps are in the low 80 range. Has been for a while.
I can't recall the hum of the fan coming in at all since I've fitted it.
Only reason it came up as an issue was that it was high 30's yesterday, and AC was running .. coolant temps got up into the low 100's which is 'way off the charts' compared to normal.

Day before was 30, and AC was running(this is all around suburbs/town) and coolant ran up to a max of 85 on the daily run to commuting my better(looking) half to work.
I can't imagine that it just stopped working literally that day.

I've had a few times where I've trialed not running the fan at all (around town), with zero net effect up to about the low 20 degree ambient range.
Reason for this trail was to confirm that if I switch to an electric driven fan, that I will see the benefit of quicker warm up time in really cold situations.

I reckon I will definitely go with an electric setup very soon .. but still get a new viscous unit for now.

Anyhow ... sorry for waking everyone up here!
