Discovery 1 with Range Rover ARB winch bullbar and Warn high mount 8274

Before I did this I looked for pictures / done before etc. and couldn't find much info.

So here is some for the record.

The Range Rover ARB winch bar fits directly onto 1998 Tdi Disco 1, no mess no fuss. My bar has seen a lot of action and has a few bends in it hence is a bit out of alignment. Non-airbag bar and non-airbag vehicle. It fits with recovery points and the Land Rover tube steering protector as shown in the pics. Looks OK, it fits well enough that you don't notice at first glance that it doesn't fit the shape of the Disco front end 100%...

The 8274 winch does not fit the RR ARB bullbar without modification.

Mounting holes are spot on, no need for new ones, however the winch gearbox side interferes with the shape of the bar and the bar needs to be trimmed.

You need to cut the bar, using the spotlight mounting on the RHS as a reference. See picture. I have stalled the winch on double line pull and the first cable wrap with no sign of bending etc. It is very solid even with this material removed.

The winch will hit the top lip of the mounting tray. I did not want to trim the top strengthening lip of the winch mount, so I fitted spacers under the mounting feet of the winch to space it backwards towards the radiator.

The winch control box and motor just clear the top rail of the bullbar. Sweet.

You will need to make some sharp bends in fat power cable to bring it out nicely from the bottom of the control box as space is tight. I used 2 x 0 gauge cables on the positive side, flexible type sold for car audio. The winch casing is earthed back to the batteries using a single 0 gauge cable (there is an alternate current path through the bullbar and chassis).

The winch fits just fine into the radiator bay of the Disco, plenty of room between it and the aircon fans, however you will need to remove the radiator grille and cut it to fit round the winch. Easy job, looks neat.

The car doesn't run any hotter than before with this in the way.

    Any other questions, please ask...

    Best wishes,

    Andy

    Nice lookin set up mate.

I have a high mount in my disco, mounted in an older style ARB bar. I cut out the top of the bar and welded a 6mm gusset in the front and lower section to strengthen the bar. So the bar is now 9mm thick between the chassis rails.

I haven't put the original grill back in, I am using some mesh I bought from supercrap.

What size tyres are you running?

I'd be worried about airflow with the winch in the grill like that, lucky to get a 98 disco without a windbag.

I do have pics but my internet is so slow I can't use photobucket or similar sites and I can't find the program I used to use to resize pics so I can post it straight from my computer to here.

Anyone know a free program to resize pics?
