    Cooked v8 Advice please

    hi o knowledged ones,
Our vicious couple on our series one has played up, we were loaded up and were climbing through hills when it showed up, couldn't pull over due to the road and lack of a safe place to do so.
It had not showed any problem until then.
    The result extreme overheating!!!!
We have replaced the vicious couple and will replace the fan belt and water pump, give it a oil change and have the radiator cleaned, as I think it may be a good idea.
The vehicle is not noisy, no knocks, rattles, idles smooth and is pulling as good as ever. I should also mention it is auto with about 240,000k.
My question o knowledged ones is, can I expect this vehicle to continue as it should or am I in for a serious heap of issues?
    Thank you for your thoughts,
    Jim

Depends on what you mean by extreme overheating. Your temperature gauge means little, its only a guide and a poor one at that. If you lost only a minor amount of coolant it may well be fine. If you had to add more than 1-2 litres I'd worry a little more. The truth is, you'll never accurately predict the death of a LRV8 by overheating, they fail when they feel the urge to. 240K is smack in the middle of their expected age range where a significant number of them will have died of a cracked block anyway. If you keep an eye on coolant levels daily for a few weeks and it doesn't use any just keep driving it.

So if I am correct and read between the lines, although the motor seems fine I can expect it to distroy itself regardless, is that what is meant?
What ever happened to the indistructable Land Rover like the ex army ffr series 2a I used to own before I got too old for it, sigh I guess technology marches on, but in all seriousness what are the chances of us getting any life expectancy out of it? Or would I be better disposing of the vehicle before it shows magor issues, I have looked into sleeve replacement before for our RRC and the cost is prohibitive on our kind of budget and this disco was in great mechanical condition, well cared for and serviced properly, except of course for the vicious couple, any further thoughts folks?

Thumbs up Don't give up on it.

No,no,no, it sounds like you are contemplating writing off maybe a good vehicle, if it is because you do not have the experience and expertise with the spanners sounds like you need to seek out a friend that has those skills to give an accurate assessment of the engine. Try for someone who has a bit of history with Land Rover, but in the absence of that just a guy who is a good mechanic on engines, and has good diagnosing skills, a rare commodity today among mechanics, but there are still some around that can.
Land Rovers have some sort of undeserved reputation of being "different to the extreme" somehow from other vehicles among a lot of mechanics, the dealers are in a big part responsible for that with their "money grubbing" ways so they can charge the earth for simple repairs/servicing.
Get some basic cooling system checks done to see what if anything has been damaged, it is hard for people on here, (this forum), to try and second guess just what has happened to your overheated engine, even though there is a great depth of experience and precedent, but without the benefit of seeing first hand what has gone wrong, the best answer you may expect will be that the last experience ended in absolute disaster, so...............? this may not be so for your vehicle, you have already had a lot of the issues attended to.
There is no mystery, and with some simple well carried out repairs and maintenance your Disco may still be ok, they are still pretty indestructable.
We have two, and I know you can't kill 'em. Gaz

Pressure test the cooling system to see if any leaks are present? Shouldnt be too hard or costly to do. u can also try that fluid that changes color if water is in you system when you put it near your exhaust pipe.

    Hi Gaz
The engine seems to be doing all that it should, having said that we haven't had a chance to do the repairs as yet so haven't really had a chance to drive, as I say the engine isn't knocking or useing coolant, and the oil, apart from smelling burnt is still clear.
I have some mechanical ability and have rebuilt several engines including the one in my 2a, over the years.
I guess I have read too many stories about LR v8 having liner troubles and heads getting soft due to overheating.
I guess what bothers me is the different expansion rates between the alloy and the steel of the liners, I'm sure as an engineer you understand what I mean,
I am afraid I have not had a lot of experience with LL v8s except for the engine in our RRC and that has had a problem all the time we've had it, runs ok but looses about 2 litre of coolant every 500k with the most horrid gung in the pressure vessel, was told a long time after we bought it by another person who knew the previous owner and the car that it had been cooked badly,
So I hope you can understand my concern.
Thank you for your responses, it's good to get an experienced view of our chances.
I don't want to dispose of the vehicle but on the same token can't afford a major rebuild so if it seems like it may continue to be serviceable,
    Ta jim😊
