hi all,
I need advice please. have 96 auto tdi D1, 200000 km engine unknown history, engine is more rattly than my 400000 manual tdi, oil pressure slow to turn off oil light on start up (5 secs), lots of oil leaks from sump and both wading plug holes, timing belt unknown condition or age.
SO, I checked tappets (all at 10 thou...reduced to 8 thou)
all engine bolt heads seem untouched so think 200000 is genuine.
changed oil and filters using 15-40 Valvoline engine-armour (always use this on manual disco) this made oil light slow to respond...maybe original oil was thicker (?) (maybe big ends...or mains...Aghhhh)
I am preparing for desert retirement trip so need reliability....and I'm old.
so January job planned is remove engine (leave auto in ) and do the lot...ie head gasket, timing belt and seals mains and big ends...not pistons or rings unless i have to. Full radiator service will happen.
am i on the right track here???
my questions...1. can i leave the aircon system alone without degas? perhaps just shift it sideways ?
2. should i loosen harmonic balancer first?
3. any other hints?
thanks in advance
robbo
1. The aircon compressor will easily swivel to the side when you undo it off its bracket, hoses stay on.
2. The harmonic balancer should be easy to undo when you have the engine out by holding the ring gear. You can also do it by removing the starter and putting a socket onto a ring gear to torque converter bolt. You have to undo the 4 ring gear bolts in any case so the torque converter remains with the trans.
