    Clutch change

got quoted $1450 to change the clutch in my 300tdi disco1. that is just the labour. I have the replacement parts. the guy reckons 12 hours of labour roughly. seems excessive to me. i know the disco1 clutch is not the nicest job but 12 hours seems excessive for a LR specialist.

    would you guys agree?

he said they go from the gearbox side of things and a lot of times you have to change the seals from Tcase to Gbox and rear main (which in my case needs doing). these were all extra cost. so if he changed all these seals would probably take it up to +2k.

i always thought clutches were one of the cheap jobs in term of automotive stuff. been thinking of doing it myself but i thought i would ask the question. if it was a matter of a few hundred bucks i would have gone with it. but 1450+ is way too much.

Seems a tad high just for R & R and clutch. I recently got my auto box replaced and it cost $1200 including a few seals.

They figured 6 hrs to drop the box and replace, plus 2 hrs for the console (which you might offer to do yourself to save some cost). I got rear main done and a couple of other seals too for the total. I'd already got some done in advance on the auto box.

if you have the tools and trolley jack do it yourself. Or a cheap flight to Perth for me and I could help.
In all honesty, I Did mine a few months ago and it took me 8hrs. I found the trick is to keep the gearbox crossmember attached and move the whole thing back enough to remove/replace the clutch.
    cheers

If you end up DIYing, I suggest you first drain the transfer case and fit the extended sump, giving you a level surface for the trolley jack head:

With a couple of simple guide pins made from 10mm x 150mm long bolts with the heads cut off getting the transfer box off is quite easy using a trolley jack. Take the hand brake off completely to make the transfer box lighter. It can be tied aside without undoing the cable. Once you've got the transfer case off balancing the gearbox on a trolley jack is much easier. Refit the gearbox first, then the transfer, then the hand brake, driveshafts and console. I suspect your mechanic has never done it the easy way like this.

Had my 98 disco 1 300 tdi clutch done four weeks ago for $1530.
That included clutch kit ,flywheel machining and a rear main oil seal.

well actually the guy is a very well known perthLR mechanic. i will not say his name but ive gone to him before and been recommended on this site many times. probably THE most well known one in perth. I thought 12 hours would be a doable goal for a first timer like me. i would have thought the guys at this place with proper workshop and LR specialist tools would be able to do it in 5hrs easy.

good thing is my centre console is already out as I am modifying it in order to be able to fit the window switches onto the broken tabs. i will post pictures when I actually get around to doing it.

also i was gona do the gearbox return spring plate at the same time so the stick centres.

only problem is im getting married in 2 months and right now i cant spend money on anything so i cant buy any extra stuff like rear main and any other bits. still need to buy slave cylinder and clutch fork too. plus machine the FW. so it will have to be a next year job. for the time being just drive around with no centre console and no offroad/camping.

or i could call off the wedding and do it all now. what do you guys recommend?

Fausto - I did a clutch change in my defender a few months back. If you want a hand, I have an engine crane and most of the tools you will need. Even have a second hand slave cylinder you can have. Drop me a PM if you want a hand with it, on night shift next week but any time after that should be fine with me

appreciate all the help from everyone. what an awesome forum. i have a lot of tools at home and a mechanic friend who i am sure i can talk into helping me. just need to make a centreing tool for the clutch plate.thanks for all your offers, i should have it covered though. as i said, probably have to wait until after wedding anyway. in the meantime i'll just drive my honda or drive the disco gently. it still runs ok, i just think its at the start of it going bad for the clutch. since i revd the hell out of it when it was still cold on boggy sand.
