transfer case rear seal
Hi all,
Earlier today I replaced the rear output shaft seal on my D1 tdi auto transfer case. I could see the oil leaking out around the bottom of the flange when I took the park brake drum off so I know I was on the right track. When I popped the flange off the oil ran out (into a bucket). Easy enough to pop out the old seal and replace it. However, when I filled up the transfer case with new oil it started to weep out around the bottom of the flange again within a few minutes. There was no obvious damage, everything was a nice tight fit, there wasn't a groove in the old flange. So I'm wondering, the felt seal that sits behind the washer before the 30mm nut goes back on didn't look the best. Didn't have another one so I used the old one as it was not oily and so assumed it didn't seal much.. Thoughts, suggestions?
Cheers

Looks like you have considered the usual suspects.
Yes the felt seal can allow it to leak. Most people just put some sealant in there and reassemble.

Well I came home today and crawled under the car to have a look. I hadn't put the drum back on so was easy to see what's going on. The oil weep must have just have been some residual mess working its way down to the bottom of the shaft. I cleaned it up last night and there was no oil visible this afternoon, so I'd say all sorted. Fingers crossed!
