    300tdi vacuum pump

    As I'm working my way through the various leaks the vacuum pump is now next on the list. As has been mentioned in other threads in the past mine is leaking around the riveted cover. I know some people have drilled out the rivets and replaced with bolts and I'm wondering if this has been a successful long term fix? If I leave this leak for the time being what is the worst that can happen?

    I did mine 12 months or more ago and its got a small weep still, just enough for some dust to stick to.
    The worst that can happen is the bottom of your D1 wont rust. I dont think it will come apart or stop working.

    I did mine a few months ago for the 2nd time but thought i'd seal it up better while doing a head replacement and now its dry.

    Mine was leaking dramatically and I did the fix. I don't think I applied enough sealant though as it's got a slight weep as above. Lasted about 3 months so far.
    I'll do it again soon.

    Thumbs up Worth a repair.

    Carried out the rivet to bolt swap on my Tdi vacuum pump about 18 months ago, it still is functioning fine and has the smallest of oil weeps that requires a wipe when doing the 10,000 klm oil changes but no drama.
    Some on here say that if the pump cover is leaking at the riveted joint that the whole pump is on the way out, I have found that it can be re-secured with little expense and effort and still work fine.
    The leak is usually only a result of the "cheap" way the pump is put together from new. Gaz

    More than 3 years ago the original Wabco vacuum pump started leaking from the usual rivetted join.

    As I was about to enter the Simpson Desert I thought the better of leaving it on and so swapped it out for a new Britpart pump from the UK.

    Within 2 months the Britpart was also leaking from said joint.

    The old Wabco went back in - with rivets done away with in the usual fashion and it's been fine ever since. The Britpart one - minus the rivets - is now a spare.

    All that being said, the old Wabco has always had an ever so slight weep from one of the welsh plugs but it's never amounted to anything more. Anyone had one of these plugs pop on them?

    The cover plugs only close the poppet valve housings, the plugs in mine have never leaked but I doubt they can pop out as it is after all a vacuum pump.
    One other problem that has been experienced with the vac pump is that the "Tappet" or cam follower that drives the reciprocating action of the pump from the cam can wear, the follower is slightly offset to to the centre of it's cam lobe laterally and is supposed to slightly rotate on each stroke to even out wear to it's face, but for some reason some or many of the followers do not rotate as designed, thus a track gets worn on the tappet face.
    Also an oil spray there to direct lube oil onto the cam/follower interfaces can block up in older high mileage engines or so I have been told, this accelerates wear. Gaz
