Killed the D1 - fix, sell or wreck?

Well the trusty D1 has overheated and although I did a quick and dirty head gasket refurb it appears that I have some bottom-end issues too because she is really slow to crank. (300tdi). So what would you do? Repair, sell or wreck. Emotion tells me to save the old girl. My wallet tells me to sell or wreck because a new engine would not only treble the value of the car, but I'm sure the auto will go next etc etc. I could sell the winch and bar, dual battery system, uhf cargo barrier, lift kit etc as parts on gumtree. She's got 240000k on the clock.
It would be an excellent project to repair the engine for someone with workshop facilities (and some time). So what would you do? Matti

2nd hand motor or wreck I would say? Unless its a particularly clean example otherwise? They are 2 a penny, a bit like the RRCs get em anywhere running for $1500. ish

Slow cranking doesn't sound like bottom end problems.

Keep it. Fix it. Providing the rest of the car is in good nic. im keeping mine. They don't make them like they use to. Mines got 275 on the clock. I'm about to order a reconditioned gearbox. Depends on how much you want to fix yourself. What would u get in replacement?

@Isuzurover - understood, perhaps better explained as maybe a broken ring and some major bore wear, if not a bottom end bearing issue. Either way the engine will need plucking.

@Pop058 - haven't really thought about that yet? I need to have a look at the market and come up with a figure. It is a nice vehicle, especially with all the gear on it. Maybe I will do some research over the Xmas break and come up with a figure. If I do I will PM you first. - Cheers,

    Thumbs up Fixer upper!!

Matti, why not have a go at fixing the beast up, as a wreck it is not going to be worth a lot of dollars. Earlier this year I bought my old '97 D1 back off the guy who bought it from me a few years back, I paid $750 to him for it because it had a blown head gasket and had warped the head, it was pretty well used and abused but now I have it going and looking ok again for an investment of about another $1000.
Of course I have done all the work myself and it has taken 6 months but it has been good to see the old dear up and running again and it has helped fill in time, and I think of it as occupational therapy.
So Matti, if you think you have some time and a little bit of mechanical savvy you could make a project of it and you will still have what is in my humble opinion one of the best most capable trucks available, and after all what else can you buy that will be as good for the relatively little money you will have to spend to fix it up. Gaz

Surely you would have checked for that when the head was off? The condition of the bores is the first thing I look at when I remove a head.

What sort of condition is it in body wise?
If very good, I'd be tempted to throw a tarp over it and stick it in the corner of the shed. Over time gradually do all the repairs you have mentioned and more.
It's probably worth not a lot now and probably even less in the near future but, over time, it will become sought after. I reckon the 3 door D1's are collectable now.
