Thread: Missing Key Remote Fob

    Question Missing Key Remote Fob

    Hi guys.
My recently purchased D1 did not come with a key FOB remote for the central locking.
I am not even sure that it has the capabilities to have one, but from what I have read, it appears that it may.
It does have central locking attached to the drivers door when operated by the key.

Has anyone had any experience with getting a FOB and programming it to the vehicle?
Or can anyone tell me what I should look for to see if it is a possibility?

    Thanks.
    Jeff

Providing it's not an absolute base model as supplied to some Government agencies (does it have SRS airbags?), you just need to get hold of a 315MHz, 2 button remote & programme it to your car.
I haven't done one personally but I believe there's no diagnostic gear needed for this job.

Thanks Scott and thanks for the link to the remote. That's great!
I have read in a workshop manual how to connect a new remote and it didn't appear to be that hard, as long as you hold your mouth right...

The vehicle does NOT have SRS or ABS so it is certainly not a top of the line model.
That is why I was asking if anyone knew exactly how I could tell.
I don't really want to buy a remote if it isn't going to work.
The original owner was private however, not govt so there is still hope.

As far as I could tell from my position in the LR dealership at the time, the only D1s of that time that came through without the major safety features were a special order. If your car missed out on SRS & ABS, then it could well have missed out on the security alarm too.

If you're handy to a dealer, pop in & ask if they can look up the build specification for your VIN.
I think you can also check this on TOPiX too.

    Thanks again Scott.
There is a dealer in town that I could harass.
I will have a look at registering on Topix first and see how I go.
I will post back if I find any useful info.

If the remote is the two button type as shown in Scott's link you'll need to find someone with the right gear, Testbook or Nanocom, to programme it.

The easy method found in the manuals and online only works with the early single button fobs. I got two new fobs from the UK and tried all the easy solutions before going to KLR and getting them to do it - even easier than doing it yourself and not that expensive.

    Ah, thanks Ian.
Nothing is ever as easy it first appears...
I will keep that in mind after I find out if I even have a receiver module.
    Thanks again.

Yes, the single buttons are a doddle but I thought I'd heard these were nearly as easy.
2nd hand 2 button remotes (providing they still work) can be re-programmed to another car too. Early MGF / Freelander1 have the same remote.

Well I think I will be looking at one of those second hand (Does anyone have one for sale?) or non-genuine replacements.
I went to the local LR dealer today and presented the VIN and my request.
I received a written quote for $344 plus $140 programming per fob.
Ouch!!! (Nothing I didn't really expect though...)
I quizzed him on the vehicle having the capabilities and he said that the part came up under the VIN, so I guess that's as good as I am going to get out of them.

Didn't get a reply from Topix yet so can't log in there to check it.

My model doesn't have too much in the way of electronics. There are no diagnostic ports under the dash so I am thinking that it would nearly have to be the procedure in the manual to pair the fob. (Yes, I am trying to convince myself.)

There is another ex LR mechanic in town.
I will pick his brains and see what path presents itself from here.

I wonder if you could buy a universal central locking kit and fit it to the drivers door.

Plenty on evil bay for around the $30 mark.
