The D1 was never fitted with the 4ltr motor only the P38 Rangie and the D2 , technically though the 3.9 and 4.0 are the same capacity and was only renamed to try and distinguish it apart from the old 3.9.

    Thanks
must of got my wires crossed.
just seeing as a back up plan if the 3.9 I have turned out being bad(blown gasket( number 5 spark plug steam cleaned)
there a few 4.0 for sale (gum tree, ebay).
i have seen a few sites droping a 4.0 into with some parts from 3.9 to 4.0.
are the 4.0 liners are better. or just a problem with the rover block

Number 5 cylinder has no water galleries in the head gasket nearby so it's a cracked block, I'm afraid.

3.9, 4.0 and 4.6 motors all share the same bore size and poor quality control notwithstanding, all are equally likely to crack the block. The best cure is flanged ("top hat") liners but that'll cost heaps regardless of which engine you pick. A good 4.0 will still need you to use all external parts (inlet manifold and injectors, front cover, sump etc) and the camshaft out of the 3.9 with the exception of the heads which are pretty much identical.
