Thumbs up 1998 D1 V8 Erratic idle fixed. Hoo bloodyray

    Finally

Thanks to Beeutey and everyone else who responded.

I was going down the route of replacing all sensors and IACV and Base idle settings etc. Glad we found this before expending too much more $ and time.

The symptom was an erratic idle when stationary , in drive , after 30 minutes of driving.

Idle did not so much hunt , as step constantly from 750rpm down to 450 rpm and very rough and back up and down constantly. But only when warm/hot.

Other than that , it seemed to drive ok to me.

A couple of people commented that it sounded like a miss more than a fuel or air intake issue. b

Turns out it was a dodgy coil and ignition module. Both have been replaced
    with new now.

It was the later ex factory set up with remote IM.

Previous repair dockets from before I bought the car showed the coil as being replaced.

It had been replaced alright . With the polarity back to front

All is now good , the car even drives differently under acceleration and deceleration.

I reckon the gas consumption has even dropped

What was the Sherlock Holmes quote

" When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth "

    Thanks again fellow AULROVIANS

Mate - I chased the same problems for ages - rotor buttons, caps, HEI module, coil, even the pick up coil! Still intermittment probs. Solved by a Scorcher coil by Performance Ignitions. It is basically a holden V8 base with Ford rotor button and cap and AUSTRALIAN Bosch HEI Module. All stumbling idle and all LPG gas misfire/backfire gone. The difference in spark was amazing. The Australian HEI systems have a lot more grunt than the Brit stuff from what I have seen. I believe that there was a little play in the Lucas Dizzy - wear perhaps - which would not have helped.

    Cheers

    Thanks Scott

    So can I ask

    1. You changed out the coil to a Scorcher coil by Performance Ignitions? That would mean I now have 2 spare coils

    2. I am not sure what you mean by ' [I]It is basically a holden V8 base with Ford rotor button and cap and AUSTRALIAN Bosch HEI Module' Did you also change out the distributor and the remote Ignition module ? The 1998 's already had the IM mounted remote. We also just replaced the IM. The auto elect fitted what he thought was the Bosch equivalent but we couldn't get any spark ?

He means replacing the distributor but brace yourself for the cost, you dont need to replace it to get a good working ignition.
Are you sure your problems are attributed to the ignition, it would effect both gas and petrol running if that was the case.

If your gas stalled you could have any or all of a number of problems.

    1. Too low a coolant flow rate will allow the converter chill down after a hard run. Usually it goes rich as you back off the throttle and heat once again evaporates excess liquid LPG inside the converter. If you charge up a hill, pull over suddenly after stalling, open the bonnet and see how hot the converter is. Dewdrops forming on it is a bad sign...

    2. Your converter could either dirty inside or just slightly out of adjustment. Find the idle mixture adjustment on your system and turn it a little each way and see how much it needs to get smooth idle again. Some systems are quite unstable and require frequent resetting of the idle mixture.

    3. The engine's base idle may be too low to cope with slight mixture problems, and the stepper can't catch it in time. Use a 3/16" allen key to bump up the base idle a bit, the key fits in a recess on top of the throttle body near the air intake hose.

If you had ignition problems stalling would be just one symptom of many poor running issues. Scorcher distributors are nice but unnecessary in my opinion. I've had quite adequate results with the Bosch module conversion on the stock distributor.

The scorcher was necessary on mine because a new remote mounted Bosxh hei didn't fix it nor did new pick up coil, cap, button , coil all at the same time! Cheers

Thanks guys. I am hooking up the engine temp watchdog tomorrow. Then we will see what temperatures we are running at the thermostat housing. That may narrow it down to a hEat issue. It cuts out after 15 mns ongas. No condesing butthe vaporiser does run at 92 C. runs fine on petrol buy maybe a bit rich when hot
