    Gearbox, Clutch or Both?

    Hi,

On the weekend I picked up a D1 with the intention of stealing a few parts for my Defender 300tdi. It cost me $580 so it gives you an indication of the condition I was expecting it to be in.

Yep. The roof and bonnet is faded, the driver seat fabric is pretty worn and it has the usual oil leak from around the oil filter area. A couple of the outside door handles don't work (the usual broken spring) and the interior needs a good clean. In other words pretty usual for a 20 year of D1 which has never seen a garage.

But apart from the radio and speakers being removed from the "D" pillars, it is complete. All the power windows work. It pulls like a train and steers and brakes beautifully. Which means I'm suddenly inclined to save this one from the scrap heap.

However, there is a but, and it might be a big one. While the clutch engagement is positive, the gearbox crunches every gear. The only time it doesn't crunch is when it is stationary and you are picking 1st or reverse.

Double shuffling doesn't seem to make a difference, and the clutch pressure doesn't bleed off when you hold your foot to the floor.

I've heard of the R380 being interesting getting into second (like my D'Fer is when cold), but every gear?

    Suggestions please!

Got any oil in the box? Otherwise likely tp be the clutch dragging, perhaps most likely due to problems with the hydraulics.

    What year is the D1?

If the gbox is full of trans fluid, change it to a light oil. I use pentite 75-80 semi synthetic and the difference in the gear change is amazing. Don't use 80-90w, it is too heavy for the pump in the gbox.

It's a 1994 model. Ironically the same as my D'Fer.

I have not checked the oil yet, and the vehicle came without a service history.

The clutch engages pretty low on the pedal, about 1.5 inches from the floor. Much lower than my D'Fer which has a new clutch.

There is no crunching selecting gears when the vehicle is stationary.

My 96 disco was the same, changed nice when stopped and had real trouble getting into gear without some grinding. I changed the oil and now all good.

Give it a change, only a small cost and with no service history I would be changing ALL the oils.

Thanks Neale. All oils are on the to-do list as part of getting it back on the road. I'll try this first.
